Police checks

Ok, the guides indicate that the required police checks include the CPIC search. Others have obtained the certified police check/report. I'm aware they are different searches.

Can anyone advise specifically which of those is specifically required?

I want to add that the Dept of State site shows that a CPIC is required but I'm aware of other types of checks. Today I went to the RCMP station and was told that the criminal record searches are valid for only three months. The DS site doesn't specify any timelines. I'm still awaiting NOA2 so I'm not at NVC but I'm trying to do as much as I can ahead of time to anticipate for this and to have things ready to roll to prevent any delays. I would obviously wait until at least NOA2 before I obtain a crim check if in fact they are only valid for 3 months. If NVC doesn't particularly have any issues with this, I'd be glad to get it done this week. The RCMP process of checking takes 2 weeks to complete, I'm advised. And for the record, I've got no past record. I'm professionally employed and required crim checks etc.

Any and all information on this is greatly appreciated.

Okay, here you go!

If you have had any criminal convictions in the past, you have to get a Police clearance from the RCMP which might take up some time to get issued. On the other hand, if you have no prior convictions, you can just get a Police clearance certificate from your local/regional police station in which the CPIC box needs to have the check mark. When you go to the local police station, tell them that you need a certificate for your immigration purposes and I am sure they know which one to issue.

When are the police checks needed during the CR-1 process? Where do they get sent or brought? I think that is what the OP is trying to determine - since the checks are only valid for 3 months when would be the most effective time to get them done so they are still valid when required.

As for only being valid for 3 months - that's an RCMP 'thing' - not an NVC thing - they will generally accept one that is up to 12 months old.

Thanks all. The central issue for me was this 3 months valid check thing but I think you're right Trailmix, it's more a police issue than is NVC's issue. And unless anyone has been notified that checks must be within 3 months, they'll accept them without too much concern. I would think someone on VJ would have run up against this and /or the Dept of State site would likely have mentioned it etc.

I'm going to go ahead and have it done so I'm one step closer to getting my package together looooooooong before the real package is required.
