correct me if i am wrong here but it looks like this would be more of a problem in the north and less in the south. my SO lives in Tay ninh which is about 35 miles south of ho chi minh. so here is my question. even if i put her parents address as the contact/sponsor, can i just book a hotel and stay there all alone and just be fine with that?

Yes. American girls are easy.

He wasn't to hard to convince...well, I guess kinda. :P

My last trip was most definitely the most fun--I convinced him to take time off from work (nearly 2 wks) so that we could travel VN... definitely the best of my four trips! :);)

Sounds like fun indeed. When I got to travel we had to rent a van and driver that could carry 10 plus people. Wasn't till the last two days that we even sat next to each other and even then we held hands on the ride to the airport only when I was leaving. I just assumed that traveling in a pack was the norm.

Carl, if you're really worried about it then just rent a hotel room and stay there alone. Spend your days at your fiancee's house, and return to the hotel at night. If your fiancee visits you at the hotel, then either make sure she brings someone with her, or just leave the door open. Be conservative, and treat it like a Victorian courtship, and there isn't any way you'll run into any problems. Her parents will not be offended if you don't live at their home during your visit, especially if you explain that you don't want anyone to get into any trouble. Just plan on spending a lot of time at their home. They're going to want to get to know you.

I haven't heard of anyone on VJ getting into any trouble over the anti-prostitution laws, and as you've seen many people do stay at their SO's home or stay with them in hotels. I don't think the cops are interested in busting up a legitimate relationship between two people. Their main concern is prostitution and sex tourism, and maybe getting a little "coffee money" on the side. But, you should do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable.

If you're not in the Ho Khau, then you will have to register with the Ho Khau police. They will want to know why you are visiting and staying there. Registering is no big deal, but should be done if you stay there. They won't put your name in the Ho Khau because they don't want to give you the same rights as Vietnamese residents.

Jim,

Thank you very much. I feel alot better now. I discussed with my fiancee and we agreed that since this will be my first time, to try to do this as conservative as possible. I will stay in a hotel in Tay Ninh and will visit her family every day and return to the hotel at night. We will also be conservative in public. Very nice and respectful to the Vietnamese culture will be what I will do :) Once again thank you Jim and everybody for making me feel secure. Now it's time to get ready for Tet

Carl,

Know what to take with you.. there are a great many discussions in the old Asia East forum, here is an example

We would stay together everywhere and nothing was said, probably because Linh paid off whoever. I watched money sliding across the table on more than one occasion. Cash is king.

Stay with her parents so they can know you too. You will learn a lot just being there. Try to engage them to the best of your ability. You will gan a lot. Enjoy!

Among my finest memories are when I stayed with my Fiancees family. Nothing like noticing my dirty clothes are gone and going around to see where they are and then looking up and seeing your underwear hanging out to dry where the whole world can see. Or the slamming down of shots with my future father-inlaw and the future mother-in-law yelling at him to stop it and he laughs out loud and pours another. Many fun times were to be had.
