56% of all Americans and 58% of those 18-29 years old say abortion ‘morally wrong’

(NEW HAVEN, CT) – On the eve of the 37th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion throughout the United States, a new survey shows a strong majority of Americans believe abortion to be “morally wrong."

“Millennials” (those 18-29) consider abortion to be “morally wrong” even more (58%) than Baby Boomers (those 45-64) (51%). Generation X (those 30-44) are similar to Millennials (60% see abortion as “morally wrong”). More than 6 in 10 of the Greatest Generation (those 65+) feel the same.

Interesting, good to see there's a slight majority that see murdering an innocent unborn child as "morally wrong". How about making it a crime to murder the innocent?

I read some numbers like that not long ago and was a little surprised.

Anyone want to speculate why the decisive shift has taken place in this normally more socially liberal demographic?

Nothing really jumps out at me right away.

Mm, I consider myself to be liberal, yet I don't think abortion is right. Emergency contraceptives perhaps...

Good, I'm glad young people take these difficult questions seriously and spend time weighing up the pros and cons of ethically difficult questions. One can be sure then that should a young person be placed in one of these difficult situations where an abortion is an option, they will not lightly make the decision to have one. Leaving the choice up to the individual is clearly the best policy. Good to know

That was VJ spin job as good as I have ever heard.

People who find Abortion, rape, incest or anything else are more likely to restrict or outlaw it.

Now tell us what you really think?

To be honest, I have always hoped... even dreamed that this republic would live long enough to see a rejection of the old failed path we have been on and a new revolution of sorts would be born.

I always believed this would have to come from the below 25s crowd.

To the OP - of course abortion is morally wrong.

Yet, everyone does something morally wrong at least once in their lives. I do not support abortion (who does?). Yet, I support choice and I am against making abortions illegal. If the question was asked differently: do you think women should be legally liable for abortion? The poll would give quite a different outcome.

Also, as there are too many people on the planet anyway, it would be morally wrong to make unwanted babies and/or to have more children than one can reasonably support.

wish it had to be 2 individuals.

...hopefully not as in "the baby's father decides he wants no babies so a woman is required to abort"?

the other way around, he just might want to raise it. it is half his, seems fair that he should be somewhere in the decision.

Rubbish. Most people are not interested in telling other people how to live their lives, they are too busy living their own.

I find it fascinating though, that despite all your predictions of moral bankcruptcy due to this degenerate society that we have had to suffer for the last, what 50 years?, the majority of young people in fact have a very sound moral compass. How do you explain that?

You say that as if no fathers ever have any say in whether a pregancy is or isn't terminated. What #######. The reality is, this is only a problem in failed relationships (for the most part) and in truth, the majory of would be fathers in these circumstances are relived when a woman chooses to abort.

Fair to consider his opinion, yes. Any good person would.

Yet, a woman would have to consent to devote her time and effort for 8 months (say she was not aware about pregnancy until 1 month past). She would have to go through painful birth process, which may kill her or cause her health complications (it happens). All that to bring a child into the world to be raised with no mother? That does not seem like a very good idea somehow. If mother is adamant about not wanting this baby, one can try to persuade her, but how can one require it?
