I've heard that on the K3 visa it is permissable to drive on your foreign license up to a year before needing to get a local license. My DMV told me this only works for 'international' type licenses and that my husband's Indian license won't suffice and right away he'll need a local license. What is the truth here?

Yes you can drive anywhere in US, that is only if you have an International Licence. licence from any state of India is not valid in US.

hope this will help.

Teh K-3 is an immigration visa. The states regulate driving privledges. YOu need to know what your own state's regs are regarding driving with a foreign driver's license.

There is no such thing as an International Driver's License. There is an International Driver's Permit. They are very different. Each state has it's own regs relative to driving with a foreign license. It's a State issue; Immigration does not enter into the equation.

No, it is not. It is a non-immigrant visa with a path to immigrant status.
