You can sniff out the WEP keys using a Linux based machine. But, there are other wireless encryption methods that take a long process to sniff out the keys to unlock someone's network. It is insecure, but, there are also a small percentage of people who actually knows how to break them.

Just pointing out that the "convenience" of a wireless system comes at a price, with security, interface, reception, and interference problems. If you want to dispute this, go ahead. Just like to look at the total picture, so sue me.

Its a safety in numbers thing, I imagine.

More likely that a neighbour would try and piggy-back on your network, but as you say - a small percentage of people.

I still find people who don't even bother with network security at all - that's just crazy to me.
