Unless you have 14 days on your I-94, SSA will probably not issue an SSN till you get the EAD from the AOS.

If your I-94 expired, and you filed for the AOS, you don't have to worry, your status is protected.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Yes, you have not filled in your timeline so we cannot see the time frames. How long is left on your I94. If sufficient time is remaining your passport and I94 to the SS office and apply for the SS Card. We have not got that far yet, just arrived to the US Sunday so I'm reading as much as I can about SS card discussions!

6/15/2009 Filed I-129F

Wait two weeks after arrival at least, go to the SSA, ask for a SSN - if your not in the system, say "thank you" and walk away.

Go back and ask again, if your in the system - get SSN.

Marry - go to SSA with marriage certificate, change name as applicable.

AOS.

(that is what I did - no issues)

We waited 2 weeks and 1 day to file for SS # (no problem). Got married 12/26. Changed name on 1/13. (no problem) received card in married name on 1/22 (no problem).

Good luck to you!

You need to have at least 15 days before your I-94 expires, since SSA will not assign a number or issue a card when you are within 14 days of your status expiring. Even that is cutting it close, since the SSA office would need to verify your status right then and clear the application that day. If they person waited to the next day you would be out of luck and would need to wait until you have an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card.
