Hi there

I'm new to VJ. Actually, I've always been a lurker, but never created an account.

Anyways, here is my story: I just needed to vent out my paranoia on this topic.

Before I met my husband, my whole life revolved around work: work in school, and eventually work in the corporate world. I graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree, but never pursued a job using it. I ended up working for a software company as a software tester, and was good at it... and I liked my job. I worked for more than 3 years before I had to quit to move to the US.

I met my husband through work when the company sent me to MN for a couple of months. Well then we fell in love... then we got married.. now I'm waiting for my EAD so I can start hunting on the job market (gasp).

I don't want to be a housewife. No offense to all the housewives out there, but this is just my personal opinion. For me, it's one of the worst things that could happen to me. Before I met my husband, I didn't even think I would get married ever! And I'm still not sure if I want any kids.

Now I'm scared that I won't get a good job that I like, and I would resent coming to the US.

I know that there are other people out there who feel the same.

What did you do to overcome this problem? Did you guys eventually find a job you did like?

My limited experience in the working world (going on 4 years) is that here in the US, some people change jobs nearly as often as the seasons, and they still have somewhat successful careers. If you don't like one, move on until you find one that fits.

Job hunting isn't fun, but at least you should know that you aren't going to be "stuck" wherever you first pick to work.

I can well understand your concern. Have you checked out another topic forum here about Looking for work in the U.S.?

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showforum=135

Does your previous employer have any leads on jobs that might be available to you in your area? They sent you to MN you mentioned...thinking maybe you have some contacts from your time in MN, or perhaps your previous employer has contacts you could make here.

No offence taken by your post. It's a legitimate concern for many people. It might mean at the start you'll be unable to be in exactly the job you might like, but the longer you're working, and living in the U.S., the more people you'll meet and contacts made to find something that will be right for you.

Anyway, good luck in your job hunt! Check out that thread where there might be others in the same predicament!

You're not alone! I can relate... My husband is extremely confident that I will find a job but I'm still scared because Michigan has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology as well as a 2nd undergraduate degree - Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Arts. I had a year to go left to finish my 2nd degree but I went on a Leave of Absence when my husband (then fiance) met and I never went back to finish it because we filed the I-129F petition and got approved.

I am not even hoping to find a job related to either field (for one thing, Psych grads in the Philippines don't have board certification yet). We've just filed our AOS application so I'm still waiting for my EAD / green card. In the meantime I'm trying not to worry. I'm just doing my best to stay positive and I definitely won't be too picky when I finally do look for a job. If I don't find one that I like, I'll take what I can get and just keep on looking until I find one that I do like. ^___^

I share the same concern. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering and with not so much job experience. I've been out of the industry for quite awhile now. I'm so eager to work already. My husband is confident I will get a good job here but I really am worrying...Back in the Philippines, even though I wasn't job hunting, companies will call me up if they have a job opening which fits my qualification just to ask if I'm interested. Here, I'm so worried that I might not get a call at all if I apply.

Hey cool! Where did you graduate from? I'm from UP Diliman. I'm not sure, but I think you have to take an exam here to practice Chemical Engineering?

Anyways, good luck to us.. hopefully I get my EAD by March, and can work on job hunting :)

I'm not an Engineering graduate, I'm a Hotel and Restaurant grad and worked as a coffeeshop (outlet) supervisor in Dubai,UAE for 4 years. I've been here only for 3 weeks and started posting my resume online on my 2nd week because just like you, I also don't want to be a "plain housewife". My husband is also confident that I will find a job soon because of my experience and there are a lot of food and beverage establishments here in Las Vegas but I still cant help to worry. I feel like they won't hire me because I'm asian, though he said they don't discriminate as long as you're qualified but I can't stop thinking about the "race" issue. Goodluck to us.

Things are starting to look up!

My green card got approved last Saturday, and I started sending out resumes yesterday.

And I have an interview for a Software Tester position tomorrow!

I hope I get this job, but if not, it's still a good experience to be interviewed. :)

When I was in the Philippines in Sept. '09 the unemployment rate was over 30%.

In the U.S. currently it's just under 10% the last time I saw a report on it.

Yes, you hear a lot of stories of people not being able to get the employment they want, but you still have better odds than in the Philippines. We're just spoiled here and accustomed to always having a lot of jobs to choose from.
