I'm not a fan of the p55, it's such low end. I prefer the p58. The 1156 socket is good for the mainstream users. I prefer the socket 1366.

I have the Classified x58 4-way SLI board with 7 PCI-Express x16 slot. This is approximately 400 dollars. The good thing about the Intel i7 920 is its overclockability. Intel has something called Turboboost which automatically set the FSB, and the voltage without you tweaking it.

If you're looking for a P55 board, get one with atleast USB 3.0 integrated already as well as SATA 3.

The EVGA Classified motherboard, I have installed a Quad GPU set up using two ATI 5970 with the GPU overlclocked to 1GHz, and memory to 1200Mhz. I used the Themaltake 760i water cooler to cool the two 5970s (the waterblocks that used to cool the GPUs is a Koolance AR-597 which cools the GPU to 35c under full load as oppose to a stock cooler which gets 84c under load and loud), and a CoolerMaster V10 to cool the Intel i7 920. The case I use is a full tower HAF 932 from coolermaster. Plus, I have one nVidia Tesla card intalle. All the memory banks are full to capacity with 24GB of tripple channel memory.

Discuss. This one is for Neil. Does anyone here have one of the Intel i series 1156 socket set ups?

Is it really that much faster, seriously? My Quad core is super quick with all internet transactions, yet I leave the gaming to my Wii console......I am curious about the overclocking and so forth. Is there an appreciable difference overall?

Not for regular desktop usage. But if your into PC gaming, or use your computer for development, graphics/video or engineering, you will probably notice it.

It's very fast. If you run Crysis with 1920x1200 resolution with Max everything, you'll get framerates of about 150 avg. On a typical machine, with one GPU such as the mainstream ATI 5770 or 5850, you'll get probably 30 fps. That's when there's not much action in the game. When you get action, it gets to less than 20 fps.

1920x1200 is considered higher definition than 1080p.....it's actually 1200p resolution which many calls it HD+

Thanks for the reply. We use the computer extensively for digital video applications (pictures, video and so forth) and have been satisfied with the performance. We do not conduct "business" or extreme gaming applications as described above, so I guess we are good...

I also have a side business as well. I am a professional video recorder. I record wedding videos. I charge about 2500 dollars for my one day service. I take pictures and videos. Most studios takes one week to process, edit videos because of their slow computer. I do it in less than 5 hours. And, they get their videos and pictures all on Blu-Ray discs.

Wow Niels, that's a very large price......I guess I need a side business as well.......I can do the same for far less than that price....Moreover, most people are happy with DVDs. Most people are not as advanced as you Niels.....

I've read nothing but good reviews on the i5 750 and i7 860. I wouldn't call them low end by any means. The X58 does do some things better, but clock for clock on many things they are quite close. Neils has an extreme cutting edge system and for that the X58 it top dog. In all of my computer and overclocking forum reading I have only read of a few people running 24 gigs of RAM. He is at the top of the pile. Are you planning on getting the Gulftown when it comes out?

When the Intel 6 core chips comes out in a couple of weeks, if not 1 or 2 month, I'll be selling my I7 920 off and use that chip.

I need to have 24 gigs because of the TESLA card. It does double precision floating point operations. Most regular cpu has only a single precision floating operation.

Is that performance level required for anything consumer related? I am thinking not......

The Coolermaster V10 Cpu cooler is the bomb! It's so good!...You know with Intel SpeedStep, my cpu idles at 27c....but on max load running PRIME95 with four instances of it at full blend torture test mode where each instance is assigned a cpu affinity - I get a max temp of only 42c.
