husband want to take driver license in another state

Hi, everyone!

hope you guy can help out! my husband who just cam ehere in u.s about a five month. Now he left me to go to school in another state. I don't how long it will take him to come complete with his school. anyway, my question is my husband already have a driving permit and in feb he will take a road test. But now he called me that he want to take driving license there and want to buy a car to drive to school. From my state to his state, it took about 8 hours drive. So will it worth if he take his driving license there? IF he bought a car in my state, he can't drive to over there? how about insurance etc. Husband is stay at his sister's house while attending school. So his sister help out with financial. If he bought a car, the car has to be in his name and he must have a state driver license right?

if he has a driving license there, will be consider his legal residency? will it effect when i apply for 10 year greencard?

He should check into what is required by that state to get a Driver's License. Most require proof of State residency which means mail sent to him from official sources like a bank or utilities to prove he actually lives in that State. If he really lives with you then he is only a temporary resident in the state where he is going to school and he may not be able to get a Driver's License there. He really needs to check out the Department of Driver Services for that State.

Every state has different requirements and you will need to check with the state's DMV. For instance, in NC, you need to prove your residency here in order to get your Driver's License and you have to have a NC-issued ID to register your car here and I (think) you also need to have NC insurance before getting the Driver's License.
