America...your bread sucks.

A lot of the foods are different here, not just the bread. There are good things and bad sides to the arguement. I'm missing English chocolate, but on the flipside I can't get enough root beer!

Marilyn, that's a cute cat you've got there.

So true about the good and bad....

and for anyone looking for a non sweet bread in the US....try Gluten free bread, my son has Celiac and can't eat wheat products . I just tasted his sandwich bread for the first time out of curiosity and it's very unsweet.

I fully agree the state of bread and pastries could use improvements in this country.

And what´s up with almost only offering a single type of cake, that tasteless fluffy white sugarcake with butterfrosting....

Where do you live in the US? Publix, Sweetbay, Target, all offer some interesting cake choices....I hate butter frosting....at Publix you can actually request what type of cake you want and what type of frosting you'd like, cream cheese frosting 'i think' is the best....

OK... i agree...the first thing i said to my husband when i moved here was:your bread sucks! But then i found french bread, and italian bread...they are preety good. Also, you can make your own bread...muuch cheaper in the long run then buying bread. Depends on how much bread you eat, if you eat bread everyday it's worth buying a bread machine.

But the cake is even worse...all cakes look good but they taste like ....

Well, I'm American, but you can't find good bread in San Francisco? I lived in London for six years and while I miss the cheese and sausage I can't imagine getting nostalgic for the bread. I used to buy La Brea bakery bread in Harrod's in London, though some Tesco's stocked it as well- great sourdough loaves made in L.A. and probably sold in San Fran as well. Yes, it costs more money, but NOT than in England! Also find ethnic bakeries for rye bread, challah- I never eat that surgary ###### from the store. Put a little work into it!

I never knew bread was so important.

By the way, this is America. Forget bread; eat tortillas.

Yikes! The tortillas in the store are even worse!

All, I can say is I grew up on pumpernickle from my Polish grandparents, and is still what I prefer, especially from Whole Foods.

I agree too! I don't understand what the thing is about potato bread, sourdough and all that... how about plain white bread! Worst thing is my hubby lived in canada with me for a little over a year and he never could see a difference :( I think all that ####### burns their taste buds ;)

I agree.

There is like 5 bakers in my hometown in France, and I so like to smell the good still warm bread from the sidewalk but it is sure different in US.

We did find some "french" bread at Kroger, but it was not fantastic...we will probably get a bread machine once I move in with my bf.

I discovered bagels in US though, and I do like it (especially the ones with black berries in ^_^ )

I got a bread machine, and let me tell you...it's awsome! the bread comes out super, and it takes you 1 min to do it, the machine takes care of the rest. It's really yummy too! I make bread every second day now, and it's always fresh, and no preservatives, and other non sense.

Try it! If you eat bread at least 4 times a week it's worth buying a bread machine!
