Yea - the orange juice is bitter and it takes a while before you get used to it. Most of the other juices also have either high sugar content or they dont taste natural.

You will have to try different brands until you find one that you like. Samething is with plain yougurt or butter milk they have weird smell and texture.

I have found some really good yougurt in Indian stores in Dallas.

Talking about bread, I hate the usual store bought sliced white loaf here too - too sweet and sickly! It gives me a bit of a stomach ache. Ahh... what I'd do for a crusty french baguette or tiger bread from home :) Oh and a Greggs here would be wonderful (UK peeps will know what i mean). The best thing I find here is 'italian bread' that you get from your local Italian restaurant. I also came across bake your own bread in a sealed foil wrapper in the frozen dept at Whole Foods the other day. I chose the 'sour dough' variety but they also have many others, so I'll let you know how we get on with that soon! Whole Foods also stock plain, wheat and cinnamon crumpets too and they're not too expensive at $2.99.

With yoghurt... I tried my first american yoghurt the other week - just a usual Light & Fit one and it was awful! Grainy, watery and articifial tasting! But again in Whole foods we came across something called Chobani Greek Yoghurt which is gorgeous cos its lovely and thick and creamy with a layer of fruit on the bottom and is 100% natural.

I've been visiting my then fiance here in the US for close to three years now and its taken me this long to try different brands until you start to find ones you like so keep trying! :)

Do not buy bread from the shelf. They are too loaded with preservatives which give it that sugary taste. Instead buy the freshly made breads from the bakery. They taste much better and you normally have a much better selection.

I didn't read this whole thread, but both Whole Foods and Central Market here in Texas have good bread. The Central Market especially-they have a huge selection of fresh baked breads to choose from.

I'm the USC, and I hate the bread here too.

Ohmygosh, I was so excited to find Ace Bakery (Canadian) bread in my local Blooms store the other day!!! They just started stocking it. I sure hope they continue. I found that Wegmans has a new Italian bread that's just as good. I can't remember what it's called (not sure if they call it ciabatta or just plain old Italian) but it's as close to normal as I've been able to find. They just brought that out a few weeks ago. :)

As for the yoghurt.... I've been able to find my favourite real Greek yoghurt in a couple of stores. It's hard to find, though. :(

I really really wish I could find liquid Bovril. I cannot find anything which compares. Oh, and proper rye bread. That would be nice too. Maybe I'll ask the Blooms store. If they're importing Ace Bakery breads they may just import the lovely ryes and malt bread from Canada too.

No more tears. I found an Irish bakery down the road the other day and bought the most beautiful white, floury almost like velvet inside - slightly crusty on the outside bread, for only $3.50 which is a bargain!! I got home and had with butter and cheddar cheese to dip in my homemade soup. Can't wait to buy one every week now.

Ohmygosh, that reminds me!.... I was driving down a street I'd never been on before the other day and passed by a place called The British Pantry or something to that effect! I'm going to go back there to see what they have. I jumped up in my seat and said to my husband.... "Oh! Maybe we can get real sausages in there!!!" I was pretty excited. lol

Wow, I'm starting to think that Indiana is a food mecca. British food is pretty easy to get at the 2 major mid-west supermarkets and I haven't had problems with most of the stuff that I would typically eat in NZ or UK. Maybe it's just me? I'm not a bread lover but found a good one for hubby and while a lot of American cheese is awful (specifically the one called American Cheese) I find blue and french style cheeses pretty easily. It's the sweeties and decent chocolate that I miss but I just found Aldi has the same choc that it stocks in the UK (only of the only same things) and that stuff is pretty good, at least for baking. I noticed that World Food Market has online shipping so you might find things on there if you don't have one near you.

I noticed that too, although I wasn't very sure why it tasted so off. I thought it was just that I hadn't found the right brand yet. I didn't normally eat too much yogurt back in England, and I was always a bit fussy about which types I preferred, so I figured it was just me. I did find one or two brands that were decent, though for the most part I've just avoided yogurt and tried to go for something else instead.

It's hard to find, only my local Meijer stocks it, but if you don't mind yoghurt that isn't non-fat then Brown Cow cream top is super yummy - I didn't used to eat much yoghurt but I love this stuff. I'm not sure if the other ones contain HFCS but the creamy one doesn't: http://www.browncowfarm.com/OurYogurts/

Sugar is bad, bad, bad. Watch this video. Seems we can actually blame the government for some of our sugary woes here in the states. Fructose and Sucrose are horrible, and not just because of the calorie content. Seriously, watch this video. It's a real eye opener.

We're going to be moving our diets far away from most sugar sources once Bel is here. I know a lot of my health issues are from the fructose in everything. Not that I'm terribly unhealthy or anything, but most of the problems can go straight back to the sugar in everything.

Try Liberte yogurt if you can find it. It's Canadian so no HFCS. I have found it at Wegmans and Whole Foods. I just wish they'd add more flavours down here. In Canada, there are many amazing flavours. Coconut is divine. Lemon is so good. Mocha is better than ice cream. Really. It's definitely not low fat, but it's yummy. In Toronto, I found it at Sobey's and Fiesta Farms.

Our "bread" may suck because most of us are more interested in making the green "bread"...money.

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

I'd rather fill my body with natural cane or beet sugar than HCFS, which may start out from a natural product but ends up un-natural due to the refining process. I love that Dr Pepper and Mtn Dew have released throwbacks that I can actually drink. I figure if it's natural then I can eat it in moderation with no nasty and unknown side-effects.
