To be honest, I've never had home made bread that I prefer to the store brought (or even better, bakery brought) bread in the UK.

For the amount of bread that I actually would eat, I doubt it's worth it for me to follow the home made bread route. Not right now, anyways. One day, I do intend to give it a try - so that I can have it as a treat, if nothing else. Home made bread is certainly better to US store brought bread.

I'm really hoping I can find something good at the local bakery. In the meantime, I've been eating out at Subway a lot, since I find their bread actually tastes nice.

Hahaha such a great thread, first time I came to the US with my fiancee she made me a sandwich and i thought it was some kind of a joke. I spent ages trying to find decent bread the best I could find was stuff from the bakery which is usually more expensive but no way am I eating that sugary stuff they call bread. My fiancee's mum recently found some nice bread which isn't sweet but it's quite expensive again, too bad. One thing I'll always miss from England too. Every time I go back one of the first things I eat is a nice sandwich or some toast.

Costco tends to have decent crusty rolls and specialty loaves in the bakery section. Just toss them in the oven for a few minutes. IKEA sells brick bread mix and it is not bad. Idiot proof, at any rate.

Will have to try the crusty rolls, I used to get these lovely ones every Saturday over the shop near my house in England, I do miss them.

I have given a try to home made bread and it came out quite nicely:) much better than the store stuff- although I did find some sourdough bread at a farmers market which was good, expensive, but good. I want to try to make natural yeast too-- but it's a challenge I will take on in the fall!

We don't eat too much bread (luckily) but I sure miss my Italian bread...I guess it's nice for my waist line not to have it around as much like when I'm home, but this summer when I go visit I plan to eat lots of it- and a good amount of focaccia too!!!

I just found out that we will have a balcony at our new apartment so I'm going to try and grow tomatoes and lettuces because we eat a lot of salad. I'm sure that there are plenty of nice veges over there but I'd like to have a go at growing my own.

Ahhh!! so nice to see that I am not the only "weirdo" who does not have this sugary obsession everyone else has.

Don't get me wrong, I like chocolate and ice cream every now and then too.. but my bread and pizza most definitely don't need to be sugary!

container gardens should be the next big thing!!!!!! I am incredulous to see most of what I buy is on the "dirty dozen" list. I buy organic most of the times but not ALWAYS. And, it's expensive!

Come on, now.. You all sound like a bunch of New Yorkers who've moved to Florida only complain that "things aren't like in New York."

Personally, I make my own bread. It's much better that way AND I get to decide which type I want shortly before using it.

Thanks for that article! It was really interesting. I buy from both lists but I will definitely be searching out organic until I can have a proper vege patch.

I discovered some reasonably tasty part-bake type french baguettes at the local grocery store a few weeks back, and ever since I've been enjoying them. It's not as convenient as a normal sliced loaf, but at least it didn't taste too weird. I guess I can live with it, which is a relief to have found something I enjoy. The grocery also sell french loafs, so I am thinking of giving one of those a go at some point. The only problem is that I am the only one that likes to eat bread, and the french baguettes went all green and moldy after only a day or so. Now I'm trying to freeze them, and only defrost one at a time. But it's not always very convenient then.

So far, for me food has taken the longest to adjust to. In the UK, I am used to having had a variaty of frozen meals available (most of which taste good). Here in the US, I have had the misfortune of buying some really disgusting foods. It makes me weary to experiment when some of these products are so terrible I cannot bring myself to eat.

i like whole wheat and multi grain breads.

but if you don't like bread selection in the USA, be sure not to go to japan!!!

they don't have any bread selection at all!

but they sell a lot of weird random bread snack things that are sugar or other random ingredient based.

Having had some success with french baguettes, I brought a french loaf to see how I liked that. I was pleasantly surprised. This is certainly a bread that is passable for me to eat, and at least I don't have to bake it which makes it more convenient.

I can finally relax my search for edible bread, and worry instead about finding decent canned tuna. I've tried several brands of tuna, and none of them are very good at all. My husband agrees tuna in England is better, although I am not certain why - I am thinking they must use a different type of tuna fish.
