Brown, however, maintained in an interview Wednesday morning that claiming the election was a referendum on Obama would be oversimplifying what had happened there. Nor, he said, was it merely a matter of voters rejecting Coakley.

Asked on NBC's "Today" show if the election was a referendum on Obama, he replied, "No, it's bigger than that."

"I just focused on what I did, which is to talk about the issues — terror, taxes and the health care plan," he said. "I don't think it was anything that she did." Brown noted that he was able to establish himself as a strong candidate by traveling across the state. "People enjoyed the message."

He called the Obama-backed health care system "not good for our state." And he said he believes he offered voters the vision of a public servant who would vote in Washington for whatever is best, "whether it's a good Democratic idea or a Republican idea."

As voters in Massachusetts flooded polling centres yesterday to choose a successor to the late Senator Ted Kennedy, there was one image of the Republican runner, Scott Brown, that may or may not have been in their minds: half prone and naked with only a carefully placed hand hiding his most precious assets.

A campaign poster this was not. Rather it was the picture of him that graced a spread inside Cosmopolitan magazine when it named him "America's Sexiest Man" in 1982.

Had it emerged sooner, the portrait could have put the brakes on the Brown insurgency. But last night, he was potentially on the brink of pulling off one of the most astonishing election upsets in years, with the general consensus being that the race was too close to call.

I don't know, I do not believe that I would buy a used car from this guy, just a feeling that is normally correct.

Latest NBC polls show 25% of the nations voting public is republican, 35% is democratic, leaving the vast majority of 40% where I fall in as the majority.

But what the republicans and democrats do have is well oil machines to get anybody they chose elected, the vast majority has nothing.

Same old ####### election after election, unhappy with the republicans, vote democratic, unhappy with the democrats vote republican. This guy will have to vote in the senate the way his party tells him to vote or he will be history. So will he be able to gets the funds to continue that super expensive Boston tunnel project, or will he be getting coffee for the rest of the senate? Time will tell, but time already did tell, same old #######, tired of it.

After listening to NPR on this subject for an hour, it's okay for me to listen to the radio while on a business trip, with all the experts on this subject, the main reason why

Martha lost is because she and Ombama thought they had this election in the bag and Martha simply did not campaign like her opponent did. Should be a good wake up call to the democrats. Notice I know how to spell democrat even though I am not one.

Another expert stated, sorry can't remember the names, that the democrats better remove the wax from their ears and start listening to the American people. Maybe they will listen now. And why do we only hear about election reform only when an election is forthcoming?

Our present governor was an attorney general, doesn't know ####### about running the state, perhaps it's good she didn't win.

Also claiming it's an historic election when less than 2% of this nation makes a choice, if you factor in the winning marginal, way to small to even consider, but may make a difference.
