advice on bringing our cars into the US

I'm trying to get a clear read on whether we need to get some special paperwork done to bring our vehicles across with us when we move to the US (from BC, Canada). Something I read seemed to indicate I might need a letter from the manufacturer stating that the vehicles conform to certain US regulations. We have a Dodge Caravan 1996 and a Toyota Corolla 1994 and up until now I assumed they would not be a problem to bring across.

does anyone have advice on this or a story of what you did? It could be tricky if it takes a while to gather letters etc.

thanks,

Rod.

Yes you will need the letter of compliance for each vehicle.

If you cannot get the letters in time, you can opt to import it within a year at the nearest port (not necessarily a border)

There are many threads about this in the Canada forum and in the pinned topic at the top of the forum you will find the link to more info on taking your vehicles :)

The letter needs to state that the vehicle meets EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and DOT (Deparment of Transportation) standards.

We're in the middle of doing all the paperwork for a car my hubby's father sent down to us from Canada and we also did this with a car we drove down from BC. The first car wasn't as complicated, we had to take it for an inspection and also get a statement that it complied with emissions requirements etc. The new car has a sticker under the hood that states it complies so we can skip that bit with the new one. We had to go to the local airport to the customs office so we could get a form from them and also a customs inspection. I can't remember all the steps but it was a bit of an annoyance. We had to go to the county clerk I do believe to file all the papers and stuff. It was a lot of legwork and paperwork and right now we are halfway through doing the second car. Have you started the process yet?

I have not started the paperwork yet but I sent a fax with details I was told to send to Chrysler asking for the letter of compliance. Hoping they can send back the letter by fax before the weekend when we move. Didn't know there was still so much paperwork to do. thanks for your feedback
