My wife ordered me two or three Pixies albums for Christmas, but they didn't arrive in time for her to bring them with her. But yeah...there's a band that I'm sure I'll like, but I just don't know much of their stuff.

One of my guilty pleasures is Veruca Salt. Guiltier still is that my favorite Veruca Salt album is Resolver, which is after Nina Gordon and Louise Post acrimoniously split up. It's just such a mean and gritty album with one of the best productions I've ever heard.

Yea they're awesome. I've seen them 11 times. :D Yes I'm proud of it... I am!

Kim Deal was the one who inspired me to pick up an instrument when I was a teenager. She is just an all around amazing woman.

Do you have the eponymous second album by the short-lived band The For Carnation? It's a great disc and has Kim Deal singing on one of the tracks.

It's a very dark and moody album... Two former members of Slint are on it, and it's produced (and synthed on) by Tortoise's John McEntire.

It's like the dark side of Sigur Ros...but with intelligible vocals!

Funnily enough I think I'm going to head out to HMV and buy a CD. :P

Anyone heard the hard rock / metal band Baroness? Their album from last year got some incredible reviews and I really like the soundclips I've heard. I'm more in a hard rock mood these days.

Oh yeah! It's fantastic. It's a real mood setter. It verges on creepy at moments, but the FEEL of it is rather akin to Massive Attack's Mezzanine (one of my all time faves), even though the music isn't like that.

I highly recommend it to YOU, dear Nevada. I think you'd dig it. It's headphone candy too. I'm a snobby audiophile so I say that about MOST things...but this album in particular has some very strange stuff going on VERY quietly in the background.

I can't wait for Massive Attack's new album in three weeks! Wooo.

Honestly, 95% of it is for sound quality. .mp3s have a 9-to-1 compression ratio, and there's some serious loss occurring in the transfer. They're fine for casual listening, but if you're more of an active listener, you'll notice the dullness of treble and the flatness of the sound in general. Plus the added noise to the softer sections of a song. When I need to get an .mp3 of something, I spend fifteen minutes or more "repairing" it, by converting it back into a .wav file, then making up for some of the lost frequencies by narrow band boosting on a paragraphic EQ, plus re-adding a bit of the stereo separation that is lost in the transfer as well.

If you are getting that much distortion from downloaded music, then you are getting it from a horrible source. I don't want to get yelled at by the chat overlords so I won't mention any names, but there are ones out there that have great quality.

Hmm...you should check out some of Craig Armstrong's solo work. He was a BIG part of how Protection sounded, doing a lot of the synths, string arrangements and atmospherics. He's also done quite a bit of film work and has worked with Sarah Brightman (there's a great song called "This Love" that they do together). But he has at least two solo albums that I know of, and both of them have the same feel as Protection.
