Yea muse is one of the best live bands I have seen. Black holes and revelations is a great album and their most solid to date imho.

With Shiny toy guns, I first heard "don't cry out" and was just in love with her voice, it's so clean and crisp but yet really edgy and hard. But I agree, not a solid album by them yet... I use the "skip" button a lot when I listen to them. It's either really good or really bad, but good enough to keep them on my 'mostly played' list. I just really love her voice.

I love the original major tom by Peter Schilling though. Hey wyatt do you like roxy music?

I love the original by Peter Schilling too. I recently made my first (and so far, only) 80's mix, which included that song, along with some Ultravox and other 80's bands I find palatable (there aren't too many of them!) And yet I love the cover of "Major Tom" even MORE. It's quite faithful to the original, while making a few key updates (I love what they do in the second to last chorus...the one before the penultimate "coming hoooooome" line). You owe it to yourself to check it out, if you haven't already!

I don't mind Roxy Music. I have Country Life somewhere. I remember buying it as a teenager and being rather embarrassed by its cover. As I recall, its cover was actually banned in several countries...I can remember if I bought it in the U.S. or Canada though. I used to make regular CD trips to Circuit City in Bellingham around that time. The cover is of two women in see-through clothing, lying on the grass...one with her hand down her panties... I love the song "Out Of The Blue" off of that though. It has some great production work too -- there are parts where the entire mix is run through a flanger. Either that or the multi-track reel-to-reel tape was being pushed on during the transfer to a two-track master -- that would give the same sort of effect. Stuff like that is what got me into music production in the first place. Or things like the song "Lucky" from Radiohead's OK Computer. The guitar that comes on in the chorus is out of tune...but the thing is, it was done on purpose...and I can't imagine that song without a detuned guitar for that part. It's just so distinctive and serves the song...

And hey, OBX and Canadian_wife? Don't feel bad! Honestly, there is some great music in this day and age, but most of it can't touch the great music of the sixties and seventies. I can't wait to have kids and rear them on Pink Floyd, Rush, Queen, Van der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and Palmer, the Moody Blues, Jethro Tull and King Crimson.

You know what's funny? I know that song and have heard it for the car commercial but I had NO idea it was Shiny Toy Guns until you just told me. I haz some catchin up to do.

:)

Well to your credit, it IS very different from their own material.

While you're looking up covers for '80's songs, check out The New Pornographers cover of Toronto's "Your Daddy Don't Know". Another excellent update that doesn't stray too far from the original.

Oh I love that song! I love their version so much. There's something about Neko Case... I don't know what it is but it's there.

I know! Their version is really incredible. And the production values were SPOT ON for it too! It's one of the best straight-ahead rock songs they've done. I love the drum sound...

My best friend was the assistant engineer on their last two albums, and was the one who set up the mics for the drums. It was great hearing his insight on how Kurt Dahle got that great sound. Of course, now I can't remember...but it was really enlightening at the time!

My boys discovered the 60's and 70's all on their own. It's a funny thing when your kids think they are the first to discover music you remember listening to at their age. (I'm talking about the late 70's guys, NOT the 60's.)

Haha...it IS funny. Though when I was a teenager in the nineties, my father HATED Queen, HATED Rush, HATED Jethro Tull and various other bands from that era! He was more into CCR and The Eagles etc., which I don't really mind...but definitely don't like as much as the more progressive stuff from back then.

So even though I was listening to stuff from his generation, I would still get yelled at to "turn down that damn music!" He would then proceed to tell me that "THAT's not music! You can't dance to it..." as though danceability was the sole means by which to determine whether something was music or not. :P

I LOVE RUSH!

You know, not to do any gender stereotyping, but I've noticed that it's pretty rare to find women who LOVE Rush. Indeed, I think you're the first I've ever come across! I went to a concert of theirs back in 1997, and I distinctly remember it was packed mostly with guys...either nerdy guys or older stoners with white beards. :P I know my wife hates them. Good thing I've got a great set of headphones and a kick-#### car stereo... ;)

Yeah, Rush is pretty great. I was very turned off by Vapour Trails, so didn't check out Snakes And Arrows when it came out in 2008, but I've heard it's not bad. I may buy it at some point... I have all of their albums from the '70's through the '90's though. I think Hemispheres is my favorite...though "Cygnus X-1" from A Farewell To Kings has been my favorite Rush song, ever since I was sixteen. I don't even mind much of their eighties stuff though, even though it DOES sound quite dated now. Counterparts was such a good album too. I was fourteen when it came out, and it was really my first exposure to them -- "Stick It Out" and "Nobody's Hero" were the first singles from that album and got a lot of radioplay. Neal Peart is arguably one of the best drummers in rock history...but I also think he's one of the best lyricists. A song like "The Trees" is as brilliant as any poem I've read.

My sister gave me her old Ipod last visit because she bought the new touch one. She had lots of stuff on it and I love about 20% of the songs. I haven't downloaded anything new to it- apparently that will screw it all up if it's not from the same computer?? Don't know much about Ipod.

I bought the 2 Glee soundtracks and they are my listening preference at the moment.

I'm a GLEEK!
