I've been trolling around the forums during our process of bringing my fiancee from Canada to the US. The guides have been very helpful and most of my questions have been answered along the way...but I have some questions I couldn't find answers to.

We JUST received packet 3 from Montreal. She is going to fill out all the documents required and send them back with the checklist this week. One of my questions is regarding the checklist...do they expect you to actually HAVE all the checklist items in hand before we send it back? Would checking them all as "yes" and sending it back constitute lying? Also, the medical won't be scheduled until closer to the interview day...so what do we put on the checklist for that? "no" or "pending" or something?

Another question, which I am sure I understand and know the answer to (I just want to make sure) is the "proof of residence" thing. Is that only needed for when BOTH parties have lived outside of the US?

Last question...my fiancee's last day of work at her job is Jan 29th. She wants to come visit for a bit before her medical and visa interview...In my mind, I was thinking we could drive to her medical and then drive back (from Maryland to Montreal) and then when we drive up for her interview, she flies back to Halifax and stays for a week or two (until the paperwork is mailed to her domicile.) Will we have any issues with this type of scenario? Thanks for the help and keep up the good work on the site.

If the canadien lived outside of canada or usa for more than 6 months, continuous time, then the Canadien will need a police clearance report/certificate. To be Presented on Interview Day.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

She hasn't lived outside Canada for more than 6 months, but yes, she's getting her police clearance. That's part of the standard documents as far as I understood.

What Darnell MEANT to say is that if she had been out of Canada for more than six months, she would need a clearance for Canada AND the country she was in for more than six months.

Just to clarify.

One shouldn't quit their job too far in advance of departing canada, as you may NOT be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI)!

Edited by Flames9_RN

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ah, that makes more sense. She won't be here more than 6 months continually so I guess I am good.

I was about to say the same thing about quitting the job!! If she's interviewing in Montreal, it may be a while yet before that date comes up, and she can get her EI because she's relocating for marriage. ( Check out the pinned EI thread)

As long as you know that each item is in her hands BEFORE the interview date, check yes and send it in!! Once you know the date of the interview, you can schedule the medical.

Yeah, we guessed at when it would be ok to stop working. In actuality, she didn't quit, she's taking leave of absence for a year...so she wouldn't be able to collect EI anyway.

Yay Singapore - my old home town, have fun Darnell!!

Hi looktome,

One of my questions is regarding the checklist...do they expect you to actually HAVE all the checklist items in hand before we send it back? Would checking them all as "yes" and sending it back constitute lying? Also, the medical won't be scheduled until closer to the interview day...so what do we put on the checklist for that? "no" or "pending" or something?

It doesn't consitute lying, basically what they are asking you is if you will have all this stuff available on interview day - so no, you don't have to have it in hand right now - just answer yes.

Another question, which I am sure I understand and know the answer to (I just want to make sure) is the "proof of residence" thing. Is that only needed for when BOTH parties have lived outside of the US?

I'm not sure what you are talking about here? If you mean domicile, it's not an issue - you are living in the U.S. (as in you...the sponsor)

Last question...my fiancee's last day of work at her job is Jan 29th. She wants to come visit for a bit before her medical and visa interview...In my mind, I was thinking we could drive to her medical and then drive back (from Maryland to Montreal) and then when we drive up for her interview, she flies back to Halifax and stays for a week or two (until the paperwork is mailed to her domicile.) You haven't been trolling enough - this is the number one most asked question in the Canada forum.
