We have applied for SSn a month ago and stil haven't received the card nor the number. Why it take them so long? I need that number for many things, INCLUDING health insurance and filing taxes.

Do we have to have the SSn before applying for AOS?

No - you do not.

However, till you get the SSN, using the EAD would be problematic. (if you applied for one with the AOS)

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

WARNING: Phrases in this post may sound meaner than they were intended to be. Read the Adjudicator's Field Manual from USCIS

Something is amiss with your SSN card. Take your receipt from the SSN office and ask about this. We applied and it took maybe 1 week for the card to arrive. The officer there told us after 3 days we could go back to the SSN office and show the receipt and they could give us the number in case we needed prior to the card arriving in the mail. It could be something simple as lost in the mail, wrong address etc. Definitely check into this.

IMO, you applied on the wrong day, got the wrong clerk.

Go Back Today, apply again.

for AOS, no, you not need.

To be more clear -

1. You applied at a time when either:

a. you could NOT be found in the SAVE database or

b. you had untrained clerk handling yer application.

2. SSN's can be had 'next day', if all is good from 1a.1b. The card is mailed, sure, but you can go back to the office, next day, get the number.

3. Go back to SSA Office, RE-APPLY. If any problem, stop. Ask for supervisor. Tell him/her - K-1 visa ! Still have problems? Go to OTHER SSA Office, re-apply.

If 14 days before I-94 expiration date, well, sorry, you lost that battle - you'll have to wait for EAD OR GC to arrive before you can apply again.

1)

we applied the next day after arrival, so it is possible. Also the clerk was NEW

3) If I re-apply wouldn't that create any problems, since I already applied the first time?

I went there and talked to the clerk (the same clerk from our first visit). It seemed like USCIS already responded at least 2 weeks ago, however, nobody in the SS office bothered to enter the information in the system

Anyways, we will get the number in 2 days and the card in 10-14 days

That's excellent news.

I think you should complain, though.

If they can't write you a personal letter of apology for their bumbling incompetence, can they at at least bake you a nice cake?

I'm really getting tired of being repetitive about SSN issues - it's the same #######, with apparently the same level of incompetency across the SSA offices across the CONUS. ####### ?

I'm glad it all got sorted for you, really !!!
