My Canadian Car registered in US

I thought I'd post this on Canadian forum.

Well, I went to DMV to register my Mazda today. In the requested form I entered the price of the car in CANADIAN dollars and they entered it in their system in USD. Automatically, I ended paying more registration fees because of the exchange rate. I specifically enetered CAD dollars, but they apparently didn't pay attention. The lady told me that there is nothing she can do since we realized that after we put the plate and stickers on. She gave us form to request a refund and who knows how long that will take. I thought this might be helpful to anyone registering vehicle that was purchased in a different currency.

One lady in DMV was pleasant, the other one yelled at me, I sort of yelled back, and my fiance told me not to, but I couldn't help it. This kind of thing normally doesn't happen too often in Canada, but I guess I shouldn't complain too much, just another experience. At least I am with the one I love now after a long process to get a K-1 visa

My experience at the BMV (Indiana needs to be different and not call it the DMV) was the complete opposite because of that form. At the border crossing when I imported my car, they asked for the value. I said probably somewhere around 11,000 Canadian. So the border officer laughed and said, "soooo, around $5000 US maybe?" Anyway, we decided to go with that to save the trouble of actually looking up the exchange on it. I figured we would never use the form again. Then, at the BMV when I was registering the car, that's what they used to figure out the tax on it. I was quite happy with that, although I was irritated that I had to pay it at all in the first place :)

I'm sure you'll get the refund within a few months. At least others can learn from our mistakes when filling out silly forms

I think you guys are refering to the Registration fees, if it's your car and you take it along to DMV, you can declare it's value at crossing but i don't think you need to pay additional tax, Reistration fees for cars is based on the value (worth) of the vehicle.

In Kentucky there is a personal property tax levied on the value of your car every year (Ridiculous! I know!) And that tax is part of your registration renewal fee you pay every year.

On top of the 70 or so for registration. If you are driving a new Beamer your looking at 1100 bucks a year in tax! lol.. make the rich pay, I love it.

Maybe they decide it's more apt to state "you're dealing with BUREAUcracy". FYI, Maryland also uses a different acronym, MVA.

wheather you become a citizen or not, when crossing over to us with a car you owned prior to move to us. At the border you can go inside and fill out a form, you can find it on the web, but they have to fill it out themselves, most cases they ask you how much it is worth, you tell them a figure and they will just enter it without a question, when in states, you take that form into the dmv, and get it plated for what ever state you move into, they will charge state sales tax on the amount declared on the form, and the normal sticker fees.

I moved to michigan from canada, paid their taxes in michigan, when i moved to california, i have not yet plated the car in california, still shows michigan, as in california or when you move to a different state, they again charge you sales tax, this is not fun,

when cross try to get the price lowest possible without the officer at the boarder questioning you, they don't know any better than check the black book, so do you homework, and get a ver very low number to them to enter for your benifit, and buy them a bottle of scotch...have fun, us is taxed to death.... i thought canada was bad..LOL

more accurately what value DMV (or whichsoever acronym is used) puts on it--which may be magnitude-order higher than actual Blue-book.

In 1992, one of my cousins went to Arlington, VA from U of M (Ann Arbor) to do residency; his car, a 1989 Mazda 626 was valued by VA DMV at $26,000 (even a NEW LOADED 626 that year didn't retail that high) for the property tax purpose (inseparable from registration value here).

We came across the border in Champlain on Sunday, my wide imported her 99 Caravan.

Where it asked for the value, we left it blank, and they made no entry. Use the truck lanes,

they take you right to the import station that way at that border.

Bought insurance for it online on Sunday night, went to NJ DVM on Monday morning and transferred Title, Registered and plated the car - paid 000000000000000000000 tax :)

Here's some news that might be of interest.

At one point she visited long ago with her beater car, I don't know how it even made the trip, but there was no way it would make it back. After a few calls, I found out that for a 9.00 charge, we can import that car in Newark and not have to take it back to the border. So next week, well go there and import it and then Title plate and Register it.

PS as well, you CAN insure your Canadian plated car with a US company.

Enjoy.
