PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Scores of U.S. troops landed on the lawn of Haiti's shattered presidential palace Tuesday to the cheers by quake victims eager for reinforcements in the sluggish global effort to bring food, water and shelter to the devastated country.

Thousands more U.S. troops are on the way.

...

Haitians jammed the fence of the palace grounds to gawk and cheer as the troops emerged.

"We are happy that they are coming, because we have so many problems," said Fede Felissaint, a hairdresser.

Given the circumstances, he did not even mind the troops taking up positions at the presidential palace. "If they want, they can stay longer than in 1915," he said, a reference to the start of a 19-year U.S. military presence in Haiti.

...

Thousands are streaming out of Port-au-Prince, crowding aboard buses headed toward countryside villages.

...

U.S. and Haitian officials also warned any efforts of Haitians to reach the United States by boat would be thwarted.

...

"If you think you will reach the U.S. and all the doors will be wide open to you, that's not at all the case," Joseph said, according to a transcript on America.gov, a State Department Web site. "And they will intercept you right on the water and send you back home where you came from."

Stories and images of desperate hungry and thirsty people threatened by unruly mobs. The U.S. goes in to help. Sounds familiar?

Yep, Somalia in 1993 and Haiti in 1990s. But this time it all be different, ok sure.

It's amazing when you see what a society looks like without a strong, functioning government. A definitive lesson right there.

At this point, they just need to get some help over there.

My friend's whole family is in Haiti and some have passed and some they cannot locate... and their homes are all in rubble. There is no food or water in the town they live in, because the aid has not arrived since they are not in Port au Prince.

Geez. If you were in that situation you wouldn't give a ####### who went to your country as long as they were going there to help you. But yet, it's always about political agendas. How about this? There's 50,000+ people dead. There's many more needing medical attention, food and water. How's that for a political agenda.

Gimme a break.

The definitive lesson here is that you don't know the difference between the concept of limited government and what's been a failed state for a couple hundred years.

The idea of comparing the U.S. to Haiti is beyond belief.
