Calling Sen. Harkin a Communist is pretty low, for one. Second, Harkin was proposing this change back when Republicans controlled both the House and Senate. Play nice or play like Joseph, Bill. The choice is yours.

Calling someone a National Socialist is better?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

What happened to the push to get a bill on to the President's desk around the New Year? What has stalled the progress?

New Year 2011? Vacations, holidays, people of the country not liking it and politicians afraid for their jobs. The usual.

after today the Dems only chance of passing this political vomit is for the house to accept the bill already passed by the Senate as is and avoid another Senate debate over a compromise. That has all the chance of a snowball in h e l l because ALL the house members have to stand for election in 10 months whereas only 1/3 of the Senators need to do that. Who wants to be the guy to lose his cushy, perk filled government job over this mess? Which congressman will volunteer for that? One can only hope it will be Nancy Pelosi but she is already in fear of her job as Speaker even before she would approve of the Senate vomit bill.

Nope, it is dead after today. Brown will win, healthcare gets put on the back burner until after election while the Dems move away from anything controversial, but then they will lose in November and Republicans will take over at least one house of congress and bye-bye healthcare (and Obama in 2012) Sometimes we need a President like Obama to remind us why we should never vote for a President like Obama. Carter was the last example and he led to Reagan, so we can only hope that history will repeat itself. (massachusetts voted for Reagan, TWICE)

Today will be a very important day and milestone. And hopefully the Dems will remain in full denial for a couple more years and try to pick apart Danno's posts instead of fixing their political problems...hope springs eternal.

That's why it is next to impossible to pass this kind of legislation with a super majority. Reid needs to change the Senate rules the way Sen. Harkin has proposed - 60 votes for the first 2 weeks, then reduce it until it only requires a simple majority.

LOL Yeah right, we can change the rules until the Dems get what they want. they did that in Massachussets. When they elected a Republican Governor they changed the rule allowing the governor to appoint a temporary Senator and required a special election, then when Romney abdicated to run for President and they elected a Democrat, they changed back to allow the Democrat to appoint someone. Today they will be hoist on their own petard

When the Republicans suggested changing the Senate rules to break the deadlock over judicial appointments (what was called the "nuclear option" just a few years ago) the Dems cried FOUL and went on with endless dissertations about the God, Country, Honor, etc.

When Al Gore thought he could benefit from counting TWO counties in Florida and not the entire state he sued to do so. Oddly enough he was hoist on his own petard as had he counted the entire state, he would have WON! But cheating was more important, rigging the game. The examples of Democrat cheating and rule rigging are legion and they continually shoot themselves in the d*ck!

Why on earth don't the Democrats just put forth a good healthcare bill that benefits the people of the country and be done with it, but instead it is all about power and control and handing out goodies to their cronies and nothing about reform or healthcare? It really is simply too important to trust these morons with. There is a lot of brilliant people in this country, at least there used to be when we could send men to the moon, invent light bulbs and telephones and phonographs, TVs, airplanes and a machine to separate seeds from cotton balls...but now we can't find a person to devise a healthcare plan? Every civilized country in the word has one, but we can't sopy anyone, we have to make up some huge mess that is more aout control than healthcare. This isn't Canada, it isn't France, it isn't UK. Our politicians in the USA are simply incapable of getting over themselves enough to get this done. The USA can't have universal healthcare because we no longer have David Crockett, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman or Andy (by God) Jackson.

Harkin is a Communist! Why would you deny that?

Liberals would rather be called "Progressives".

Communists would rather be called "Democrats".

By the way, Fascism and Communism are not mutually exclusive terms:

fas·cism

Function: noun

Etymology: Italian fascismo, from fascio bundle, fasces, group, from Latin fascis bundle & fasces fasces

Date: 1921

1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control <early instances of army fascism and brutality — J. W. Aldridge>

— fas·cist \-shist also -sist\ noun or adjective often capitalized

— fas·cis·tic \fa-ˈshis-tik also -ˈsis-\ adjective often capitalized

— fas·cis·ti·cal·ly \-ti-k(ə-)lē\ adverb often capitalized

com·mu·nism

Pronunciation: \ˈkäm-yə-ˌni-zəm, -yü-\

Etymology: French communisme, from commun common

Fascism, pronounced /ˈfæʃɪzəm/, is a political ideology that seeks to combine radical and authoritarian nationalism[1][2][3][4] with a corporatist economic system,[5] and which is usually considered to be on the far right of the traditional left-right political spectrum.[6][7][8][9][10]

...

Corporatism has been supported from various proponents across the political spectrum, including: absolutists, capitalists, conservatives, fascists, progressives, reactionaries and theologians.[5]

.....

The French Revolution and the overthrow of absolutist corporatism

In the aftermath of the French Revolution, the existing absolutist corporatist system was completely dismantled due to its support of social hierarchy and special "corporate privilege" for the Roman Catholic Church.[12] The new French government saw corporatism's emphasis on group rights as inconsistent with the government's promotion of individual rights.[12

....

From the 1850s onward progressive corporatism rose in response to liberalism and Marxism.[13] These corporatists supported providing group rights to members of the middle classes and working classes in order to secure class harmony.[13] This was in opposition to the Marxist conception of class conflict.[13] By the 1870s and 1880s, corporatism experienced a revival in Europe with the creation of workers' unions that were committed to class harmony and negotiations with employers.[13] This new strand of corporatism also began to gain adherents in the United States.[13]

Can you name a better, more concise and reliable online encyclopedia?

You could try Google to at least explore the possibilities, rather than rely on something as dubious as Wikipedia.

Personally, for definitions intelligent people can rely on, I use Merriam-Webster.
