The concept of "Black Pride" arises from the fact that the black identity in the US is relatively new and doesn't have the hundreds of years of established cultural identity that whites take for granted.

The idea of "White Pride" is and has always been meaningless for anyone except white supremacists and neo-nazis who ignore the fact that white people are indeed proud of their cultural backgrounds, and that being descended from Irish, Italian, German or British heritage is more meaningful than some arbitrary concept of "whiteness".

Yes, even blacks are descended from different "tribes" in Africa as "whites" are from Europe.

The idea of white pride is not meaningless to me at all, I sometimes get the feeling that people don't give their heritage enough credit for the society we live in today and it's sad to me that it's only meaningful to the racists. Yes - but the reason we have this nebulous concept of "Black Identity" in this country is because the blacks descended from the slave population are not able to easily trace their heritage, or have otherwise been so far removed from it that it has no meaning for them whatsoever.

In essence its not dissimilar to the sort of identity crises that are common to children who were adopted at birth.

Naturally the more diversity there is in a group the more one is inclined to sense racial or ethnic pride.

The USA was so solidly White for so long there was little need for -AVERAGE WHITE GUY in Ohio to take pride in anything connected to his race and only mildly connected to his Grand Parents national origin.

AS this changes I suspect many whites will do as other groups have done and push for "white issues", in fact it has already begun in areas as; race based hiring, race preferences in collage admission and school busing to name a few.

at some future point, painting all "white associations" as bad and oppressive will wear thin but we are not there yet.

In fact we still see people post such silly stuff as this with confidence (not to mention a straight face.)

But often people who are half or part black call themselves AA, I always found this interesting in America:

If you are white with just a tinge of anything but white then you're not white

If you're black with whatever else nationality mixed you're still black...

Because the thread is about Martin Luther King, and the tangent I responded to was about why its apparently scandalous to some people that there is "Black pride" but that "White pride" is considered racist.

Its considered racist for the reasons I have said.
