Am waiting for my NoA2 (any day soon, hopefully), but in the meantime, I'm getting what I can together for the next steps. Have a clean police certificate, have copies of my personal documents, got all of my vaccinations.

However, the Affidavit is a pretty scary thing to be facing. Our situation is as follows, wonder if anyone could give any advice:

My wife (the petitioner) is a student, and has no income or assets.

I have a very strong UK employment history, but the only asset I have in my name is a part-share of a UK apartment, with too much mortgage on it to make any dent in the requirements, and therefore I'm not going to list it, so for the purposes of this document I've got no US income or assets.

Therefore, we are filing two joint sponsors - my mother-in-law and my wife's Grandfather.

My mother-in-law has a $500k house, and close to $100k in liquid assets in the bank - however, she has filed no taxes, as she was divorced recently and didn't work prior to that, and has been living on savings, as she doesn't want to take a job at present.

My wife's grandfather is on a pension of roughly $18k a year, and has roughly $100k in the bank, and some money in stocks and bonds.

My question is, would it be best to use both of them as joint sponsors, as they both (I believe) technically reach the threshold necessary, but my mother-in-law's lack of employment and tax returns would stand against her.

MIL likely did did file taxes jointly with her former spouse. She would need copies of those returns or obtain transcripts from the IRS. See the form I-864 instructions for info on what to do if the sponsor was not required to file taxes.

Hi Mr. Man. I'm sorry I don't have any advice to give, as I'm not up to speed on all the requirements for a joint sponsor (our situation is more straightforwards). I would think it wouldn't hurt to prepare the I-864 paperwork from both of them for a joint sponsorship, and have all the documents required for both, to bring to your interview (including things such as the statement/evidence explaining why your MIL was not required to file, details on the house asset with all required documentation on value, etc.). Have you looked through any of the non-DCF threads, to see if your question is answered by other non-DCF filers who submit the I-864?

Anyway, I wish I could be of help, but this is out of my range of knowledge. I just wanted to offer you some support-- we're awaiting our NOA2 as well from London (they received my petition November 12th), and we're twiddling our thumbs hoping for news each day... Good luck!
