ok.. my husband and I are a little stuck and confused.

We want to be able to travel freely back and forth to the U.S. as my family lives there. However, we want to live abroad since we both do international humanitarian work. What would be our best option in terms of visas or a green card?

Obtaining US citizenship would allow him to enter the US freely. He would have to obtain the green card and meet the residency requirements (time spent in US) to be naturalized.

The other option is for him to apply for visas as needed. He would have to show strong ties to his home/residence country when entering with a US citien spouse.

so then everytime my husband and i want to visit my family he has to apply for a tourist visa? or what exactly?

If he is from a country that is not a part of the VWP (visa waiver program), Canada, or Mexico then he would have to apply for a tourist visa.

hm...ok both options wont really work.

If he were to get a green card.. how often could we travel back to his home country? and when they say "for less than one year" what does that actually mean? 3 months? 9 months?

You have to be resident in the US, an odd trip will cause issues.

If you just want to make the odd visit then the VWP/B would be the way to go.
