Does anybody have experience with Google Voice? Their rate chart shows 6 cents per minute to mobiles, but is it any good? Certainly I haven't found anything cheaper, and I'm wondering if this is a case of getting what you pay for.

We've been using it for about 3 months, no problems at all. It's better quality than any phone cards we've used. I wish I'd known about it before.

With Google Voice, do you hook up a wireless telephone to your computer and make calls this way? Is there decent customer support? I had a problem recently with Gmail - somebody hacked my account - and there was zero customer support. I could not ever tell if there is even any human working there. Hopefully, it would be better than that with a pay service.

No, Google Voice is just a voice-redirection service. You receive incoming calls to your Google voice account through a normal landline or cell phone (lots of options available on how you handle incoming calls). Outgoing calls are made by calling through your Google voice account. All kinds of information at voice.google.com. It really is a fantastic service.

I don't know about customer service because I've never needed it. But it's a free service, so I doubt there's much in the way of cs.

Google Voice is only available by invite. Unfortunately I've already used all of my invites, but if they ever throw anymore my way I'll post here. In the meantime you can usually buy a Google voice invite for less than $2 on eBay.

I've found Google to be very responsive if you play by their rules -- eg, email only, and to the right department. If you actually need/want to call them, you're SOL. In fact, the inability to call Google for support has been a big problem with their new Nexus One customers (which is kinda nuts, considering you can buy a phone from them but can't get vocal support for it).
