My fiancee cannot afford to miss three days of work waiting in Bangkok for her visa. Can she interview, leave her passport with them, and then pick it up a few weeks later? Has anyone in Bangkok done this? Does she have to arrange for this before her interview or can she just go to the interview and arrange it at that time? Please respond. Thanks.

Most of the consulates keep the passport and send it by mail when they issue the visa.

They should have a Fedex/Sedex/UPS store inside the Consulate that arrange everything for the mail process.

She will have to pay the fee (for the mail) and they will take care of it.

She doesn't even has to come back to pick it up.

Unless Bangkok is an exception =)

They'll keep the passport, but getting them to mail it somewhere is slim to none. She will need to pick it up in BKK more than likely. Also, I wouldn't trust Thai Post with a passport anyway. The regularly can't deliver packet 3. May that's the Embassy's fault, not sure. Let them embassy keep it until she can pick it up.

I see from your timeline you didn't send back packet3 yet.

I think they will accommodate any applicant who asks for a delayed pickup of the visa,

because it's valid for 3 months and whether it's picked up in a week or three weeks it shouldn't matter.

She picked up hers a week after the approval; she didn't ask for a specific date but she just came on the appointed date.

I have heard of cases where they made such accommodations, but I couldn't tell you who.

You might want to ask that over at the regional forum.

It would be nice if you could call the consulate to check on this, but in more than one

attempt I failed to get a warm body at the other end of the line when I was there.

K-1 is generally valid for 6 months from time of issue. The 3 months you are thinking about is the requirement to get married, not the time to enter the US.

Yes, I think this is correct. I do think that the Consulate should simply hang on to her passport for a few weeks until she can pick it up. I doubt very much that this is something we should have to arrange with them before the interview. But it would be nice to hear from someone who has done this.

What I believe I've heard is that should the interview be successful, THEN she can make some kind of arrangement

with the CO.

They would never do that before an interview because the outcome of the interview is not assumed to be one way or

the other. Even though they may have made up their mind in advance, that would never be conveyed to the interviewee

or petitioner.

Yes, I think so. By the way, the reason Packet 3 has still not been sent is that the Police Certificate is late in arriving. She called them Friday. There was some mix up, so they didn't mail it. Now they finally put it in the mail. It should arrive this year.
