Not sure if I should post this in AOS forum or K1 progress forum.

But does anyone know why the suggested is to do the SSN before the wedding?

There's a rather hefty increase in fees being proposed for the AOS process, I'd just as soon get married ASAP and try to duck in under the wire so to speak.

Doing the SSN# first would add 2 weeks + approx. 2 weeks (two weeks for them to get the I-94 in their system, 2 weeks for them to mail it to us). Another month plus the time to gather and submit the AOS forms, another month she can't work if she wants to...

Can someone tell me why it's better to wait for SSN#? Is it easier to adjust status with the SSN# on the marriage license or something?

Thanks

Dain

Can someone tell me why it's better to wait for SSN#? I mention why it's better NOT to wait below

Is it easier to adjust status with the SSN# on the marriage license or something? No it's not. Makes no difference. Just easier to have it for other things. See below

Thanks

It's suggested because SOME POE's put an EAD stamp in your passport and without an SSN you can't work.

Also, K1's are eligible for SSN's but only if you apply BEFORE 15 days prior to the I-94 expiration date and then after that date, only after she has the EAD.

You also can't get a bank account without an SSN and I wanted one so i could transfer my Aussie money over and so I could start building my credit rating ASAP.

Some find it easier to get the SSN while they know they can but make sure you read the guide because you might need the document they tell you to print: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn as not all people who process the SSN's KNOW the K1 rule.

It's NOT needed for AOS so personally I would apply for the SSN as soon as she arrives (you don't ALWAYS need to wait 2 weeks, I did to be safe 'cause it was a decent drive from me) and before she gets married ('cause AFTER marriage she's not K1 anymore, she's a spouse and I don't know if it's still possible then... someone else will know) and then you can get married and wait for the SSN to arrive while the AOS is processing. This way it doesn't hold you up.

Now she can't work until she has her greencard or EAD but if she gets it before the wedding, and then changes it after marriage she can start working the day she gets her EAD or GC. I know it helped me feel like I was "becoming more American" after I got the SSN and an American bank account. I also felt good being able to be on my husbands (fiance at the time) bank account, and he on mine.

I waited 10 days (including week ends) then we went a got my wife a SSN card. You can go back to the SSN office 3 business days later and they will give you the number (no card) if you want. Our new card arrived just 6 days later. Florida did not require a SSN for the wedding license. It is just so much more convenient to get the card early for her state ID's, co-bank account and federal taxes (instead of that ITIN number) etc. Also getting a SSN is one of the few (if any) government procedures we do for our wives that is FREE.

No, it is not REALLY necessary for a SSN to do your AOS but it makes things a little easier. Plus you will need to do it anyway so go ahead and knock it out.

On the K1 process flow it shows the step 15, POE, step 16, Apply for SSN, step 17 apply for marriage cert. I've also seen other posts where long-term members recommend the SSN first.

"Yes, and I have it on good authority you can expect 50-100% increases on ALL fees in the next year or less...petitions, AOS, everything. The fees will not be grandfathered at all, meaning you may begin the priocess with the lower fee and end up paying the higher fee before it is over (for the visa or AOS for example) "

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=233058 , 4th post in this thread.

This would also be consistent with the 2007 increase which affected the visa application fee and AOS fee as well, so it wouldn't surprise me much.

Eeee.. well I've yet to see anything official so unfortunately it's currently only heresay and I hope it stays a "rumour" for a while :P

Typically they can't raise the fees for someone in the middle of a process but because people apply every day they can't really hold that same rule to everyone so they usually they say "applications made before X date won't be affected" by the price rise so I'm not too worried... JUST yet anyway :P

Yes, I know I have some time before that will happen. Like I said, it's also so she can work sooner (and she's not just bored sitting at home all day), and because we may have a Valentine's day wedding. But I'd prefer to get married and get my AOS filed in case they do up the fee too. A 100% potential fee increase from $1090 is a lot. of money that could be better spent

I'm just not understanding why if it's not necessary it's recommended anyway, since you have to turn around and do it all over again after your name change if the beneficiary is female?

There has to be some reason it's recommended that way...

Dude, I'm with you on saving money on potential AOS fee increases, and how satisfying it would be to beat the increase just under the wire. But there is one thing inconsistent here. Getting married on V-Day is a hopeless romantic move, and so many others have the same idea, so anyone who gets married, has a reception party, goes to dinner on V-Day will clearly get GOUGED big time on prices for all your services and food that day. For example the Vegas wedding chaple where we will get hitched costs $140 extra on V-Day compared to regular off-peak days. Good luck, and keep saving that $$.

But even when you're old and senile, you'll never ever forget your anniversary...

We would do a reception later here at home, this is just going to be a small civil ceremony. We plan on doing a "renewal of vows" in the Phils. on our 1 year anniversary with the big church wedding and be able to involve her family and those of mine that can afford the trip.

haha
