funny, i read some costa rica based forums... expat forums for americans living in CR or thinking about living in CR and the advice most often given to those thinking about moving to CR is to LEARN SPANISH so i don't think, no matter if the US has an official language or not, telling anyone to learn english is bad thing.... it is freakin' common sense for god's sake.

and i believe what danno meant...was a part of the country where english is the predominant language.

even today, many people will openly state preferences for living in areas where english (and not spanish or hindi) predominates... i read it on real estate blogs/boards all the time... "don't move there unless you speak hindi"...

I don't doubt it - but that doesn't mean I'm wrong to think it's unimportant, nor that those that do are idiots ;)
