I have been to India and saw a lot of poverty there. I'm not ignorant to what poverty is.

I understand there are people happy to live their own way, no electricity, their own traditions etc. There are also those who are orphaned, unable to travel to where there may be more fertile soil and clean water, who end up in very bad situations. How about war zones too? If you want to hold adults accountable to "use their hands and brains", fine. But children cannot and they often suffer the worst part of poverty. You know that exists.

(I am not supporting the idea of the US going to take over Haiti btw, just discussing this specific issue)

Because talking about orphans and high birth death rates. Who are we to play God? When a child is stillborn in Africa they don't go "dang, where was that westerner with his good doctor that could've saved this child", no, they accept it as part of life and move on. It's the higher power's (or whatever you wanna call it) way of dealing with over-population and very natural, animals are stillborn all the time too, it's just a natural part of life.

My mother is ill and she has that same mentality, she refuses to be operated on or take any chemicals into her body and chooses to die (if so) naturally, maybe it has something to do with the fact that she was born in Africa - Our family respects her wishes and we don't push her to get medical care (that's a losing battle anyhow)...

It's not that we measure poverty by some kind of western standard, we look at things like - access to drinkable water, adequate sanitation, access to medical care, basic food and shelter, schools, etc. The humanitarian aid to Third World countries like Haiti has failed to bring them out of poverty, but that has more to do with the rampant corruption within their governments, and not because such aid has been a crutch to them. Think about it. You've enjoyed the benefits of a society which has provided you many things that we tend to take for granted. Did such benefits help you or make you a leech?

I had to edit your above quote a little, lol, but I agree with you (surprisingly ;-) on the above, 100%. Westerners often give themselves no credit for the amazing inventions of infrastructure and technology, people from Europe and England went to far away countries such as New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, America with just what they could carry on a ship and started settling down and building that land, from Scratch. There is no reason why people from any other nation cannot do the same with their brains, hands and land. I had a big '#######' moment last night, as I was studying a map.

Lets see - Cuban boats can get there in about 20 minutes, and boats from Puerto Rico can get there in about 30 minutes. ####### ?

Also - 'relief planes coming in at the airport'. Pardon, how are they getting refueled ?

and.. geez - the Texas Task Force is stuck at Ellington Field, awaiting a military plane to transport it all. Surely a non-military plane could be diverted? Ya, I know - it's a lot o cargo, but sheesh. Perhaps one that already emptied a load in Haiti, get diverted to Houston for a pick up.

Funny. Except IF you did that, AND gave them the opportunity to make money, they would rebuild Haiti QUICK, not oppress anyone, not colonize anyone and make sure they had clean driniking water, and they wouldn't even need to speak French OR English to do it! WHEn it is in someone's best private financial interest to do so...Haiti will be a prosperous country full of modern conveniences. Until that time it will not be. The Panama canal did not get there by itself, it did not grow there, it is NOT natural. It cost hundreds of millions of dollars and decades of work, and was done FOR A PROFIT using the best (and highly paid talent) of the time, including raliroad robber barons that finally built (for a profit) a way to haul out all the material needed to make the canal and the best doctors to cure the dreaded diseases (for a profit) that infested the area (and it is still one of the most disease free places in the tropics) because it is PROFITABLE to keep it that way.

If you leave this up to government, ANY government, you will simply rebuild the mess that was already there and enslave them again under one or another oppressor and they will never have anything more than what they are given by people who do not want to give. I hate racism and this is the most isidious form, that promoted by Col. Bat #######, the racism of low expectations.
