Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega says that the United States has taken advantage of the massive quake in Haiti and deployed troops in the country.

"What is happening in Haiti seriously concerns me as US troops have already taken control of the airport," Ortega said on Saturday.

The Pentagon says it has deployed more than 10,000 soldiers in Haiti to help victims of Tuesday's earthquake.

...

"There is no logic that US troops landed in Haiti. Haiti seeks humanitarian aid, not troops. It would be madness we all began to send troops to Haiti," said Ortega.

"I hope they will withdraw troops occupying Haiti," he added.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

how dare you suggest that charity and rebuilding start at home ... :bonk:

where is the global guilt making us fix our problems first?

It baffles the mind, really....with how much 'stimulus' money is flying out of Washington, it boggles the mind where all this money is coming from. I'm not saying that we shouldn't help Haiti, but to what extent and detriment to the US?

the US will let it's own citizens live in squalor, have no jobs, see a crumbling infrastructure, and die all while sending billions to corrupt governments. what do the people in DC care ... they are too busy milking the people so they can stay in control.

Sure, free stuff can be counterproductive. I don't believe anyone's denying that. But understand that in the context of this thread, we're talking about charity that will essentially help a nation that is on its knees get back on its feet. We're talking about pulling people out of the rubble, treating trauma patients, feeding the hungry. This isn't a case of a country full of people sitting on their butts waiting for a handout.

Now, your argument would make more sense were it applied to Haiti last week. Or, to Haiti two years from now. But today? It boggles the mind.

Some people are clueless.

Speaking of poverty, Shani - you keep saying that everything is normal to people who live a certain way in poverty. That is not the case with many in poverty and it seems that you, not others, are missing the point....the very obvious point. Who said those living a tribal life in peace should be thought of as in poverty? I didn't see anyone say that. People were talking about something different here. But it seems the point cannot be made for you no matter what.

I again will say I don't support the US gov't just going to take over a place like it's nothing. Haiti is screwed- majorly. It was bad enough there before the earthquake. I don't know what will happen to them in the long run even with charity.

I just hope this doesn't turn into another.... "dayum we came down there to help those people and THIS is how they repay us?"

Seem like every time we do this we end up having to fight our way out of the place.....maybe this time "the people" really want us there. (of course we heard that one before too)

Chavez: They are occupying Haiti undercover

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez on Sunday accused the United States of using the earthquake in Haiti as a pretext to occupy the devastated Caribbean country and offered to send fuel from his OPEC nation.

"I read that 3,000 soldiers are arriving, Marines armed as if they were going to war. There is not a shortage of guns there, my God. Doctors, medicine, fuel, field hospitals, that's what the United States should send," Chavez said on his weekly television show. "They are occupying Haiti undercover."

"On top of that, you don't see them in the streets. Are they picking up bodies? ... Are they looking for the injured? You don't see them. I haven't seen them. Where are they?"

I talked about this pages ago. If I add more detail, it is to me when someone is living below the standards of their surroundings - it can be relative to whatever country they are in. I am not judging by western standards.

So we are to give these people free handouts because they are "living below the standards of their surroundings"?

I understand that we have hearts and it's human nature to want to help someone who you deem as "in need" because they live within conditions that you deem unfit, but who are we to play God? Should every single human life be saved no matter at what cost and everyone be living in accordance with the 'standards of their surroundings'?

Should every one be born, live a life up to "the standards of their surrounding" and die of merely old age?

I don't know what type of higher being you believe in, but I don't believe this, and I think just as with any other type of life form on earth there is a natural way of dealing with over-population control, do what you want with your life and your kid's life, but I believe we should not interfere with communities abroad and just let them be, let them make with their life as they wish, and let nature take its course.

Some don't have any control about their life as I already talked about in a past post. But I feel it's pointless to continue this after all the good points other people made about poverty and charity - your mind is set.
