The topic of conversation changed a little LAL, it went from helping out Haiti in this crisis right now to aid in general to poor countries and the implications of that.

I've only been there once, but I don't think you can even begin to imagine what it's like unless you've seen how ####### it is there even when there isn't a disaster. I went into a government office with my friend to try to get some adoption paperwork moved through so a baby could move to the US. I walked into the office and there was a fan, a desk, a lamp, and stacks and stacks of papers, but no one in the office. Middle of the day in a government office. We finally got someone to help us and they said we needed a birth certificate for the baby. Well we went there to get one because the baby's birth mother threw it away. The person told us we'd just have to make one up then.

Amby there's nothing wrong with this way of living, in Africa people don't care about privacy like that, they often shower anywhere in public where they can, no problem. Just because we get to perhaps soak our azzes in a marble tub in hot water with bubbles every night does not mean there's anything wrong with washing outside in big rubbermaid storage container, it's a way of life, looking at this from a western perspective we say "oh poor guy has to wash outside, not in the privacey of a bathroom no hot water". Human beings have been doing exactly that for centuries before we had hot water and pipes and showerhead and bathtubs, there's nothing wrong with it in their minds, only WE think it's wrong, that's where the problem comes in so we send in free stuff to make their lives like ours, it's BS and wrong, let them be and they will find ways to live comfortably in their own way without free handouts.

So you were just surprised then, but I wouldn't be surprised if you did think poorly of them, a lot of people do, I saw that in Africa all the time, these missionaries coming over Bible bashing the locals to "convert" them and bringing over free food and clothes cause they felt "sorry" for the way these people were living. Yeah I was just surprised. The kids were very happy, running around playing and laughing all the time so I didn't feel sorry for them at all. Their lives are way better there than they were where they came from.

It would be a long term investment...to rebuild the country, bring it out of dire poverty and give it stability.

sounds like a good idea to just annex the place.. why not.. stability for the people and an end to corrupt governments plus somewhere further south than Florida to send the "snow birds". There's no bad points to be had there.. is there? Well unless the Chinese partner up with someone down there and setup their own little naval base or put missiles on the island. Although didn't this happen before in an island not so far away?
