Important question about WIC and food stamp

Not knowing the circumstances which are relevant to the OP, it seems as though we shouldn't pass judgment...but most will.

To the OP: there is no shame in getting WIC and/or food stamps if you are currently in need. It is when people abuse the system that makes others so angry. Many people have used public assistance for short periods of time until they no longer needed it and there's no shame in that.

I think the only bad decision I made was making a valid post on this forum.

I chose a nice, wonderful guy to be with. Five years later, and happily engaged and planning our wedding, both employed with good jobs and I got pregnant with twins. I don't regret this.

What I regret is that he chose to deal with his brother's tragic death and then his father's suicide by developing a drug addiction. He drained my savings account, crashed our vehicle and finally after multiple attempts at trying to get him help with no avail he left. He left me with no money, no way to pay all the bills by myself (because he had quit his job as a result of his habit), and two infants.

My family and friends supported me through this, but I felt that just like any other working tax payer, I too was entitled to some help with my children. Luckily, within a few months I was able to get everything situated, pay off the debts he had incurred on our credit cards and move on with my life.

I don't think you or anyone else has any right to say I used bad judgement. I have two beautiful children who now have a wonderful stepfather, go to a great school and are incredibly well-adjusted, healthy little boys.

So judge me!

You raise a good point, it seems we have two different types of people, those who want to wait until they can provide EVERYTHING before having kids and those who aren't prepared to provide ANYTHING.

It's a good thing life brings surprises ..or some of us might never feel ready.

I knew that I couldn't provide EVERYTHING, but I wanted to at least have a few resources behind us to handle a difficult situation.

This is not correct. The non-USC is not eligible for food stamps or WIC. If applied for, the non-USC WILL receive food stamps, but it is entirely possible the government could come back at a future date and demand re-payment by the sponsor or co-sponsor for the benefit. Then again, they may not.

"qualifying and collecting" is NOT the same as being legally eligible to do so. WIC and food stamps are programs specifically excluded by the I-864.

Only food stamps are excluded. WIC is not a means tested benefit.

WIC benefits apply to the child and mother, both of whom are USC's so it wouldn't really matter in the OP's situation anyway.

It doesn't bother me, in fact if you honestly qualify... why not?

The only think that mildly "irks" me a little is the people who act like the money they get is owed to them.

I take every deduction and In would even apply for free lunch if I thought I would A)Qualify and B) would not make my kid see them self as poor.

Look, when the Govt is trying to give you money... TAKE IT, if you don't they will find another way to blow it.
