Hello everyone! My fiance arrived Dec 26, 2009 and our wedding will take place on Jan 15, 2010. I called our lawyer today ( who charged me $1000 for our document preparations) and he said will charge me again $1500 to help us put together the paperworks that we need for my fiance's AOS. I woul honestly say that we cannot afford that kind of money right now and I would like ask you, my fellow VJ members for assistance. I would really appreciate if someone could provide me a step-by-step guide or direct me to a link if there's one available.

Here's our timeline:

Just allocate your money for something else. The AOS process is already quite costly.

You may also read the I-485 instructions in PDF from the USCIS website. Scroll down to the bottom:

You don't have to pay for a lawyer to process your AOS. You and your wife (to be) can do it yourselves. Comply the necessary requirements and send it to USCIS. It's that easy.

Yes, file AOS yourselves and save lotsa moooolahh... Also this way, you can check, doublecheck all your paperwork, correct mistakes before submitting and know the ins and outs of all the documents submitted. If careful, you can avoid RFEs.

If unsure of anything, or confused with something, don't forget to consult VJ peeps... alot here have gone through same process, different experiences/circumstances, good and bad who can give you really good advice and point you to the right direction..

Best wishes and congrats...

thank you all for the input. your help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Konkris...im sure you and your wife can just do it by yourselves..visa journey website and uscis is an excelent source of information. The more you read the more you learn...I am preparing my documents now for AOS..all the forms and instruction are available in USCIS or visa journey website. Instead of paying your lawyer for 1500 better use it for AOS fee which is 1,010usd.

wow, lawyers can really rape you huh?. you could actually save that money and do it yourself- we are. yeah it means looking up the info yourself, doing it yourself and double-checking everything to make sure its right but it can be done. wish you had checked out VJ before paying the lawyer. anyway, just search VJ for AOS and it will give you info where you can download all the needed forms, instructions on filling them out, where to send them, etc. we did the whole thing without paying a lawyer. good luck
