Ok so before my trip there was BIG news about a RUSSIAN sci-fi film similar to the Blade series, the first movie (night watch) was playing in a local theater but I could not see it since I was busy planning and preparing for my trip! :(

however I found it on eBay and asked Olga about it, she said "buy it and tell me what you think". So I did and I liked it, a little bit graphic but AMAZING special effects (on par with Hollywood!)!

Today I received the sequel (Day Watch) and am going to watch it soon!

The Russian titles are:

Ночной Дозор (Night Watch) и (and) Дневной Дозор (Day Watch)

There is suppose to be a third movie but I'm hoping I can figure out what it is called so I can get it too! :)

I'm not a big fan of Sci-Fi, but Ночной Дозор was actually shown in the movie theaters a few months ago in San Francisco. It had English subtitles. We went simply because I had never seen a Russian movie in an American movie theater.

Yeah it was playing here in Tucson, seems it was highly regarded in the movie circles!

I was impressed and I liked the sequel also! 'cept the subtitles kept freezing on me, which I thought was odd! My Russian is still not very good! :o

I'm curious though, I have heard it is suppose to be a trilogy yet I saw little options for a third movie!

I saw Ночной Дозор in a theater here in Tulsa with my college-aged son -- who also has been studying Russian. It was a trip to see a real Russian film in an American theater.

Didn't know the sequel was out. I wonder if NetFlix has it yet ...

Wal-Mart has Night Watch. It caught my eye about a month ago becuase I was shocked to see a Russian movie at Wal-Mart. I hadn't heard anything about it, so I didn't pick it up. I almost did though, just for a chance to catch up on my Russian language. Guess I'll get it now that there are some good reviews on here.

(It sucks not being able to walk up to a kiosk and buy any movie I want for $5. I don't care what they say about pirating/anti-pirating... it's kind of nice!)

NetFlix hasn't picked up the sequel yet, probably because it was confusingly released twice -- first without English subtitles, and then belatedly a second time with English subtitles. I sent them a "Wake Up!" email to tell them that the subtitled version is available.

I envy, really envy, you guys who have enough Russian to be able to view these things without subtitles. I see a lot of great acting and great scripts on my TV, thanks to Irina, that I cannot understand because there are no subtitiles.

One that I thoroughly enjoyed was the 10-hour miniseries "Master and Margarita". Although there were no subtitles, it faithfully followed the book; and since I read the book the day before Irina started playing the DVD's, I was able to folllow it.

For anyone who is considering renting Night Watch from NetFlix:

It's a dual-sided DVD. Each side has the same movie, but one side has an author's commentary and the other side has a director's commentary. The language options are different too.

More about "Master and Margarita", which I recommended above. I should have pointed out that this 10-hour TV mini-series is more fantasy than sci-fi. Incredible but true: the book was written in the 1930's; it ruthlessly satirizes the Soviet government and the NKVD (KGB); and the author was not punished; in fact Stalin even helped the author (Bulgakov) to find a job. The book remained an unpublished manuscript until after Stalin's death, however.

The story is based on a visit that Satan makes to Moscow in 1935. It seems he has never seen a society in which no one believes in either him or God, and his intellectual curiosity is stimulated. How far will people go to deny the obvious? I don't usually like movies that are made from books, but this one I did like. No English subtitles, so it's doubtful that Netfllix will ever offer it; but originals from Russia can be had cheap.
