Well long story short, I came here in 2005, the wife and I were very close to moving back in 2007 but decided against it anyway I split from the wife around March 2009 and for the past number of months been tossing back in forth the idea in my mind.. should I stay or should I go. Right before Christmas I was thinking stay.. without a doubt, rough it out alone work hard and all will be well.

Now am back to thinking go as fast as possible there’s nothing left over on this side of the pond for me and in all honesty it’s just hit me in the last day or two… there isn’t apart from a cat a job (there’s no guarantee it’ll be there next year) and my car payment lol. I’m going back shortly in part to visit but in another part to see what options are open to me over there for work, places to live.. etc.

Are there any others on the board that have done this or thinking about heading home? This is still just a thought to me but feels more and more like the right one. I assume should I go through with this the process to surrender residency isn’t anywhere near as difficult as it was to get it lol  .

Good luck. I've been to Ireland but never Northern Ireland. I hear the people are even friendlier up there.

Are you taking your cat?

Hi Aidan,

Yes, we did this. Went to Florida (from Canada) in April of 2008 returned to Canada in August last year.

While the weather in Florida is nice, most of the time and it is a pretty place, we never really felt 'at home' there per se. That's not really the clincher though, sometimes it takes a while to settle in.

We discussed it for many months before we moved back - the pros and cons of both places (palm trees vs snow, cheaper housing vs huge prices here - etc etc) but the bottom line is, Calgary just has a better economy and job opportunites/pay for my Husband were much much better.

That was really the bottom line. Now Florida is a long way from Western Canada, so we didn't make this decision lightly (since we were driving!)

But anyway, I don't regret moving back here at all. It's good you are going for a visit - that will probably help you to make the decision.

We haven't done anything about my Husband surrendering his residency, but we will get around to that eventually. Funny that they make you produce paperwork at the border to export your American vehicle but not your American PR person :hehe:

The people all over the island are typically quite friendly, people here are even nice. Yes the cat is coming with me, he's had his shots per the EU Pet Passport scheme and been chipped just have to get him a rabies shot and a titer to prove there's antibodies in his system before leaving. Well that an inspection by an approved vet on the other side. It's the least I can do for him after what they did to his manhood  Few hundred dollars later and I've imported a cat.. never did that before

I do understand, I'm going through all the pros and cons right now and so far there are more pros back home than cons. It'd be ####### again having to start over the cat is going to hate the cold but a year from now I'm sure all will be well! Well that's the idea anyway lol

You assume correct.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

That's what I thought lol and thanks. It's been so far a very educational experience over here in America, should I go back I'm sure one I won't be forgetting!

If my wife and I could find work near Dublin, we'd consider moving there since she has family there.

Unless your in construction there should be work available in a place like Dublin? I do know jobs are scarce there and here. I intend to use every contact I've got over there should I decide to go back to help me get something. If I do this I think the worst part apart from what it'll cost to import that cat is buying a used car to get back and forth to work in lol.

Well, you spent the last, what, 3-4 years getting settled and building your life here,

and now you're ready to give it all up and start from scratch again. If that's not the

textbook definition of failure, then at least you'd have to concede that it was a waste

of time.

The US is a big country - if you're not happy where you are, why not just move to

another city or state?

or maybe he wants to go home so he is closer to his family. not all people hate their family. some like spending time with them more than once a year.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.
