i thought you couldn't collect food stamps if you were working? or is that a different welfare program?

Not sure about everywhere, but I know out here people are able to be on food stamps while working. I've mostly seen it in single-parent families where the parent is working a minimum-wage job, but I'm sure it happens in other instances.

I surely can take some pics of some dirt poor americans... I dont have to go far... they are my neighbors... the man burned down his house in a kitchen fire, he didnt have any insurance, so he lived in a tent for several months , then he bought a shed with some money he raised, and he has lived there ever since, He has no electricity, or in door plumbing.... this is dirt poor...

I'm sure there's a way to give the poor food without giving them money.

How about government-run soup kitchens where they can get three free meals a day

(breakfast, lunch and dinner) if they can demonstrate hardship?

It would probably cost rather more to organize a network of meal stations instead of distributing food stamps. I can't see that going down very well.

They could make food stamps more like WIC... WIC for pregnant mothers and children only allows certain foods and each check is specific to the food type. (i.e. cereals, fruit juices (REAL fruit juices), milk, protein (beans, peanut butter, lentils) etc.) Everything is broken down by nutritional category.

They even have checks that you can only spend at farmstands so it helps local farmers and provides the pregnant mom with fresh produce. There's not much else you can get at a farmstand.

I don't think the people that object to food stamps are doing so on the basis that it's nutritionally unsound.

I like your idea, but I am guessing again that it will cost more than foodstamps.

It's a good, humanitarian thought, but you have to remember, the USA is christian, not humanitarian

I thought your idea was great (treat foodstamps more like the wic program).

I mostly object to people who are poor, eating better than me.... when I am paying for it.

AS I mentioned before I looked it up the other night and a family of 3 in my state gets $526 a month.

Not only that but they can buy all the potato Chips and Pepsi they want.... when their health fails.... who gets to pay for that?

I don't want people going hungry (in most cases) but if I can eat off-brand food items, why shouldn't they?

You can.They go by your income.Most states did away with food stamps and put everything on the good ol' EBT card.For years people were making some interesting deals with their food stamps!
