Hi All,

Just wondering for those that have been down this path before, how did you ship your fiancees things to the USA? I won't have big items like furniture or cars, but my fiancee has books, clothes, her daughter's toys, etc...

We'll be shipping from Costa Rica to the USA.

Thanks all for your help,

Al

Hello. I have a similar problem and this is what I'm going to do:

I know that I can take with American Airlines 2 luggage with 50 pounds each and one carry on with up to 30 pounds. So I'm planing to go with my wife to her interview next month at the embassy in Bogota Colombia; She is going to have those 3 luggages ready for me to take them back to the States. Then about 2 weeks latter when she gets her passport back from the embassy with her VISA, she is going to travel with another set of 3 luggage TOTAL : 260 pounds. We think that this is more than enough.

good luck.

I'll be going there to pick her up and we are coming back with 2 luggages each [ http://www.luggage.com/Travelers-Choice-TC3900G2-UD1150.html ] (with 4 wheels so we can push them) plus i have 2 luggages that we can use as a carry on which has a part that detaches for underseat storage. [ http://www.irvsluggage.com/High-Sierra/A-T...ack/HS-LC-AT205 ] The carry one luggage has backpack straps so we don't have to try and wheel around 3 luggages each.

Since all of this luggage will fit into the 2 largest luggages, when I fly to Vietnam I won't have to worry about extra baggage fees. I think this should be able to carry all of my fiancee's items, but she might have to leave some of her college books at her parent's house until the next trip.

Since you'll have to think about her daughter's toys which may be bulky I don't think you would have enough room to do the same thing as me. Some ideas could be to have that shipped by freight, which could be expensive just to ship toys or to have a day where her daugher can keep her favorite toys and gather up the rest and take them to a place such as an orphanage to have her personally give them to children that may not have any toys. Then when she comes here, have a "fun" day to get her new toys.

Forget shipping. It will cost as much or MORE than replacing all her possessions. That's not even a joke, it's that expensive.

The luggage idea is the best. Even if you have to make another trip, it would be worth it.

Just pack as much as you can.

Watch the weight though on your luggage. Some airlines charge $50-150 for overweight luggae, while others won't accept 1 lb over 50, even if you offer to pay a penalty.

Dear Eric-Pris

You are right about shipping costs. I've checked several shippers and yes, shipping costs are absolutely crazy. I guess bringing stuff back via luggage will make the most sense, I'll be back in Alajuela in a couple of weeks for a visit and probably at least once or twice more by the time Vanessa's visa is approved - so I'll just start hauling stuff back with me each trip.

Vanessa is selling or giving away alot of her things but she loves to cook so she wants her cookbooks and some other smaller effects, but my new Step Daughter is only 6 and I think getting her to be willing to give up some of her toys (even with the promise of new ones as soon as she gets here) may prove difficult.

For the little girl - get her some toys now, take pictures of them in her new room and bring them with you. That way she knows toys are already there and may be more willing to part with her old ones.

We had the same problem. My stepdaughters brought one suitcase full each of their favorite toys. The kid can bring 2 suitcases also, so maybe use one for clothes and one for toys.
