WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Members of a U.S. Government panel are studying audio recordings between former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and his top advisers in a bid to unearth new clues on the controversy surrounding weapons of mass destruction (WMD), The New York Sun reported on Tuesday.

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has already confirmed that the recordings of Saddam's voice in the tapes are authentic, the committee's chairman, Peter Hoekstra, was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

However, he did not go into detail about the nature of the conversations or their context.

The tapes were provided by John Loftus, a former federal prosecutor who says he received them from a former American military intelligence analyst.

Loftus, who will make the tapes available to the public on February 17, claims they "will be able to provide a few definitive answers to some very important and controversial WMD questions."

The tapes are part of a renewed effort by the intelligence committee to answer the question of whether Saddam had biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons, which American inspectors were unable to find.

U.S. President George W. Bush called off the hunt for the weapons last year and has conceded that the United States is yet to find evidence of the alleged stockpiles.

The WMD allegation was one of the key justifications on which the Bush administration launched the Iraq war in 2003.

(CNSNews.com) - Secret audiotapes of Saddam Hussein discussing ways to attack America with weapons of mass destruction will be the subject of an ABC "Nightline" program Wednesday night, a former federal prosecutor told Cybercast News Service.

The tapes are being called the "smoking gun" of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq. The New York Sun reported that the tapes have been authenticated and currently are being reviewed by the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

The panel's chairman, Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), declined to give the Sun details of the content or context of the recordings, saying only that they were provided to his committee by former federal prosecutor John Loftus.

Loftus has been tight-lipped about the tapes, telling the Sun only that he received them from a "former American military intelligence analyst." However, on Wednesday he told Cybercast News Service, "Saddam's tapes confirm he had active CW [chemical weapons] and BW [biological weapons] programs that were hidden from the UN."

On Tuesday night, Loftus told Cybercast News Service that ABC's "Nightline" would air an "extensive report" on the tapes Wednesday night. Loftus also described an ABC News "teaser," which reportedly contains audio of Saddam Hussein discussing ways to attack America with WMD. "Nightline will have a lot more," said Loftus.

The Left will probably say the tapes are made up.

Maybe they will be right. Maybe they won't. I certainly am not, and don't foresee ever being, in a position to make that judgement.

Assuming for a second that the tapes really do say what drudge reports they say, and also assuming that the tapes are genuine, that means one of two things:

Either, Saddam did have WMD.

Or, Saddam didn't have WMD but his people led him to believe he did.

The second possibility is more intriguing.

A good buddy of mine is in the guard and returned from Iraq about six months ago! he said they were on patrol one night and were investigating a huge warehouse outside of Baghdad, inside were mass amounts of 55 gallon drums of different chemicals. He was talking with one of the guys they called in to see what it was! All the chemicals were harmless to the extent they were seperated but if mixed together in a precise manner would make a very deadly gas,also my buddy said because they were not mixed together they couldnt be considered a WMD, The word in Iraq is that Saddam had ample time to move what he had out of the country prior to us arriving!

I think it would be extremely interesting if it came out that Saddam himself believed he had WMD's, but that he never really did. That would take us into some serious drama. Why was he led to believe that? By who and how? Was he really that scary a boss that his people were afraid to tell him they were unable to develop the weapons? Or did his people pilfer resources meant for WMD development and therefore the stockpiles that should have existed, never did? The possibilities are endless.

Bad movie? No way dude, this could be a classic.

Some piece of sh!t Iraqi officer pilfers resources and sets into motion an unintended chain of events that end up in war. In the end, the officers wife dies while trying to run through a US checkpoint and the officer sees it all happen. Distressed, he tells all and this movie is his story

Exactly, I could never understand this either! Bush tried going thru all that U.N. B.S. and gave Saddam lots of time to do what ever he wanted. They had the stuff and were able to make it, Unless the gassing of the Kurds was bogus! The pics i saw of the kurds laying dead, women, children! Made me sick! That by it self was enough for me to take out this Madman!
