Getting Married to File CR1

Good evening. This is my first post, but have been reading and researching for a while now.

I am currently engaged to my Canadian fiancee. We are starting the process if immigration. We have decided for her to move down to the US. We would like to marry in October in the US, but we understand that to legally do that, she must obtain her VISA prior to entering.

So, ideally, we would like her to be able to start working right away, that is why we are looking into the CR1 VISA.

My first question is if it is "frowned" upon if we got married up in Canada in a civil ceremony to make it legal so we can go the route of the CR1? We only live 45 minutes from each other across the border, so we see each other a minimum of once a week. We are going on 2 years together and three months being engaged. We have been on plenty of trips together and can prove with photos, tickets, etc. We don't want to cause any questions to be asked if we got married just to obtain a green card for her. Our main goal is to get her down here and authorized to work in the shortest time possible.

Thanks for any answers! If this has been asked and someone has a link, I would be more than happy to refer to that, but I have been searching for a while and have not come across any posting addressing this specifically.

Thanks again!

OH geeze, if it was frowned upon to marry in Canada, no one told me. We got married in Canada and filed for the Cr-1 the next day

Don't worry, you're fine

Good luck, welcome to VJ!

You do not need a visa to get married in the US! You need a fiance visa if you enter with the intent to marry and stay. I married in the US and returned to Canada to wait out the CR1 process with no problem. It is the "staying" that is immigration fraud.

As canadian_wife stated marrying in Canada is also not frowned upon.

You might also want to check out the Canada forum where you will find many others that have been through the process. Good luck!
