The studios are responsible for this, not netflix. It's the same deal with redbox who at one stage, had people going to stores and physically buying the retail copies on release day; that is, because WB refused to sell them the DVD to rent.

Might be, but Blockbuster will still have new releases...

I expect to see Blockbuster come back to forefront of rental now... To a good percentage of people, New Release are important...

In-store rentals are a different deal, as they charge more.

Blockbuster does online/mail rentals too. They have been for a few years now...

Their online rentals will have to wait like everyone else. Their service is quite shitty actually. Hang on a minute, where are they based out of again? hmm

Not true... the deal was between the studios and Netflix, not Blockbuster. Blockbuster still has the new releases to add to your queue.

"Avatar" for instance is available via Blockbuster as of this moment, unlike Netflix now that you have to wait until May 20....

On top of that, Red Box and the Blockbuster kiosks are all over the place with new releases for $1 a night....

This will definitely hurt some of Netflix's business when there are so many other options. People are too much in a hurry...

Perhaps they have some leniency for the company. After all Blockbuster is losing money - big time. I have used both online services and netflix was right on the money 10 out of 10 times. Every third DVD from blockbuster would go missing, be delayed a few days etc. Netfix's online streaming to my xbox also kills it.

Oh I agree. I've had Netflix for 5 years and love it. I rarely ever care about New Releases and the one's I do, I usually buy. Still kind of sucks though.

I've never been unhappy with Netflix and have had one movie come to me that got cracked in the mail in the 5 years I've had it... I stream a lot of shows and movies as well.

I'm just saying New Releases matter to a lot of people, so it could be an issue.

I used to have a Netflix (2 movies at a time) subscription a few years back, but stopped it when I realized that I had 2 movies for almost 2 months and hadn't yet watched them. Now, a couple of months ago I signed up for Netflix again, their basic 1 DVD at a time membership so I can get their streaming content. I absolutely love it. I've watched their TV shows available...and occasionally some movies. I'm still bad w/ their DVD though....the one I have sitting next to my DVD player, waiting for me to watch it, has been there for over a week. (I'm into watching Bones now and am only half way through season 2, with 2 more seasons to go....the DVD may have to wait a while.)

I haven't seen a new release in the theater in over 3 years. I just don't see paying 7.50 for one movie, when it will be available on DVD, to rent or buy soon enough....so this is no big deal to me.

A few years ago I worked in a video/book/music chain store and when the new releases came out, people would go nuts trying to get them on the first day to rent. Some would stand around the return area for hours to get a movie......how stupid, it's just a movie.

I don't care if I see the movie today or 28 days from now since most big releases are nothing I would ever watch, so try and learn to wait and have some patience.

They made a movie about it too. Here's two guys fighting over a copy of the Little Mermaid.

The true strength of Netflix is its on demand streaming. Six months ago there wasn't alot of it, but every month they are putting more and more on the server. We get discs too, but probably 2/3 of what we watch is streamed.

And yes, there is a lot of anime / foreign films to watch that are not made by the big studios trying to bump DVD sales.

There's so much other movies to see other than New Releases.

Plus this is actually GOOD news for people (like me) who watch most of their content via their streaming service.

Correct. Also, a lot of new devices connect to their streaming service. If you own one of their supported devices, you can even watch some of the streaming content in HD (you need at least a 6 Mbps downstream pipe though, FYI). (You cannot watch Netflix HD content on a PC).
