Hey again! I have a question, hopefully someone's able to answer.

I'm going to be going back home from August 1st to 31st. I should be around 4 months and some weeks pregnant. I'm flying with American Airlines since it's the only one that does a one stop...I miss Westjet. Anyway, will I need some kind of note from a doctor stating that I'm allowed to fly? I don't want to miss this trip for anything..and I shouldnt be showing by then...so yeah.

I thought it was only necessary if you were in your last trimester, unless your pregnancy is not progressing normally. If you are not showing, I would do the "Don't ask, don't tell" thing, but still make sure your dr. is OK with your flight.

I'll be sure to mention it to them, but I think I'll be fine regardless. It'll be during my 2nd trimester and I'll leave the US at 20 weeks and come back when Im 24 weeks. I don't plan to fly again until after the baby is born and about 6 months old. So yay Thank you Val.

You do not want to go tru x-ray at the airport or even tru the security check when you are pergnant.In order to do that, u will need a doc. letter indicating that u are pregnant.I had also flew when I was preg. and showed my letter and asked them that I don't wanna go tru any of those x-rays..They were all fine...

Reven-Yes, I am using a breast pump now. I've been using a breast pump for the last 2 months or so (since Baby A was 7 months old). I didn't have much choice really, as Baby A started growing teeth at 5 months old (which is earlier than average), and would constantly bite down (ouch!). I couldn't take his biting anymore, so I had to pump it out.....sigh...

So I breastfed directly on the breast from birth to 7 months. And from 7 months onwards, I used the breast pump, which I then poured the milk into his food and/or fed the milk with a spoon and a bowl (lol..he refused to use a bottle...)

Either way, it is still breastmilk...So that's good, right?

As for you...I would suggest breastfeeding directly on the breast for as long as possible. Believe me, it is a lot easier to do it this way, than it is to pump it out. But for whatever reason you cannot feed directly (teething baby, work, etc.), then that's ok too. Just make sure you buy a pump that is of good quality and is easy for you to use and make sure you have a private and safe place for you to pump your milk out.

I guess the question is - how much is he nursing now? Supply and demand basically. The less he nurses (or you pump) the less you'll produce. I believe stepping up the pumping (even though you may not get much milk initially) will increase production again.

When my daughter would hit a growth spurt in the early months...she'd nurse like crazy, not always getting a lot, but it stimulated things to start producing more.

if you allow him to self wean, he just may be reaching a natural time when he's more active and doesn't need to nurse all the time. He may be using nursing for comfort before bed and naps or when he's sick. Every kid is different..hope it helps

He gets about 5-10 ounces of breastmilk that I pump out every day, which is a bit on the low end for a 9 month old...

I've tried stepping up the pumping (about 3-5 times per day...)...and still not much difference...

I've cleaned out the pump...

I've also tried out the settings....

I've also been drinking more milk and eating more dairy-related foods....

Still not much more milk....

He's eating other baby foods and is growing more teeth (he has about 4 now) too...Which could be why he doesn't want much milk.....I think he'll grow out of breastmilk soon....

I agree, "supply and demand", I suppose....And Baby A doesn't seem to be demanding breastmilk much....sigh...

Nevertheless, I'll try pumping out even more, and see what happens.....

Have you asked if they rent pumps at the hospital you are delivering at? All of my friends that breastfed did that in Canada and apparently the hospital pumps are much faster then most of the personal ones that you purchase. And with a new baby...any time that you can save will be much needed!!

And I bought my own pump a long time after that.....(when Baby A was 7 months)

(though I was surprised that I even needed a pump at all...sigh...teething baby.....)

I'm not sure how it works compared to a hospital pump...

But yes, I've heard that hospital ones are better than personal ones...

You should definitely look into that though..if you are breastfeeding for your baby later on....

Oh gawd - I remember the hospital pump...that thing sucked like a Hoover...I felt like I was hooked up to a cow milking machine But don't let that scare you away....at least it's faster

Lol..Now I have a greater appreciation for cows and other farm animals who are milked everyday....

(oh how I wonder about those cows I see out my window every day...yes, my neighbours are farrmers...lol...)

As well, I've also been losing some weight recently...Could that be an issue with regards to breastmilk supply?

Here is another question for you:

When can I start cow's milk/whole milk for a baby? I've heard 12 months...But can it be sooner than that?

And if so, how did you introduce cow's milk to your babies?

I did not introduce any type of cows' milk until after 12 months and then made sure it was whole milk until the age of two (necessary for neural development.)

As far as your milk supply it really is supply and demand so if baby is nursing less you will produce less although the breast pump should help.

Even though it has been years and years since I had my son, I decided today to read this thread. And I am glad I did, it brought back some very pleasant memories of when my son was a baby. Can I substitute my granddaughters?

When my husband (he's the Canadian 1/2 of the couple) first proposed, I was going to move to Canada after we got married. He flew down for Christmas in December, 2008 (we were planning on getting married January 2, 2009). One of our Christmas presents from my son and his wife was a 'onesie' that said "I love Grandma and Grandpa". Of course, I cried. My husband decided that he needed to move down here because (as he put it) I would be willing to live up there, but I would never be truly happy away from the baby. In February (Superbowl Sunday), my daughter in law passed a bloodclot, and was spotting. My son rushed her to the emergency room, and they did tests and an ultrasound to make sure she and the baby were okay. My son calls me and says "She's okay, still pregnant, but they found something . . ." My heart dropped, and I said "What?" He said "There's two of them, we are having twins". Of course I cried again (and made her cross the "I" on the onesie and put "We"). To make a long story shorter (sorry about rambling), my twin granddaughters are 9 months old now. And one looked like her mommy when she was born, and one looked like her daddy. My son wants to try again - he wants a boy too - but since my daughter in law found out that if you have multiple births naturally the first time, you have an 85% chance of having mulitples again, not sure if she will agree. I told my son that if they did decide to have another one, that I could love three or four granddaughters as much as I love these two, but he had no guarentee that he would get a boy.

Everyone-As for the chances of twins and/or multiples...

From what I know....it can be determined by....

1) Inherritance....(especially the maternal side of the family....)

2) Certain type of medications and/or treatments.....

3) Age of the pregnant mother...(over 35 increases the chances of twins...)

Lol..I'm sure there are more factors......(you can probably search for that one yourself..)

Nevertheless, in the end, regardless of it is twins or not....May you love your baby/babies, no matter what!

Bern- I don't know about flying (as I didn't fly when I was pregnant, but I did travel by car for long distances in the USA and in Canada up to my 8th month of pregnancy...)...

But...I do know that you are allowed to fly up to 37 weeks/8 month of pregnancy....(so the books say...lol..)

However, in all instances, regardless of how long you are pregnant for...

Always ask and tell your doctor/healthcare professional about such travels!.....

And always bring a medical note and contact medical contact information (phone numbers, medical records)..In case anything happens....Bear in mind too...that your medical appointments will increase as you are further along in your pregnancy..So you are going to have to somehow work around that..and make sure you get the medical care that you and your baby need too..

Make sure you stretch out often, take plenty of breaks, drink lots of liquids and get plenty of food, be careful what you eat, go to the bathroom frequently, bring extra pillows for comfort while sleeping and resting....

And yeah, avoid those metal detectors and/or any other x-ray related procedures...

Ant...are you trying to avoid formula? Fill in the gaps with formula maybe. Like OBX....I did whole milk until 2 or 3 and then 2% after.

Are getting enough fluids you think for milk production?

Just got back from my midwife' appt--she said I have nothing to worry about as those airport x-rays are not strong enough to hurt the baby. Whew!

That's interesting too, in the article that it mentions about yougurt and cheese...

I've already added baby yogurt this week to his diet....So he seems ok with that...

And I'll consider cheese too...

So hopefully this will help him get more calcium and other nutrients that his body needs...

Udella&Wiz-Ummm... ...Yes, I'm trying to avoid forumla. I still think breastmilk is the best, and overall breastmilk is healthier and better for babies. For example, my son has never been sick before....And developmentally, he's doing well there too....

Oh and yeah...breastmilk is free, whereas formula costs money.......

Interesting about the whole milk too. I'll keep that in mind when it is time for my son to get cow's milk...

As for fluids on my end....I'm drinking about 1 quart of 1% milk a day, and about 6-8 bottles of water a day...I'm pretty sure that is enough fluid....

But still I can't figure exactly out why my milk supply is still on the low end.....

Hmm....

Nevertheless...I'll still keep on pumping....and giving my son as much breastmilk as I can....

Update on Baby A- He went for his 9 month checkup today....So far so good....Healthy and growing.... As well, he's pulling himself up onto everything and crawling all over the place.....Next step: baby proofing the house and walking....

I am finally starting to feel better. Now I only feel sick after I eat, which really sucks. I try to put off eating as much as possible, but I know I need to eat for Slim (Someone Living Inside Mommy...our little nickname!!!) It doesn't matter if I eat small or larger portions, and no matter what I eat I still get that queasy feeling. I am 11 weeks now so hopefully it should be getting better soon!!!!!
