chinese bride shortage

Some 24 million Chinese men of marrying age will find themselves lacking wives in 2020, partly because of the country's one-child policy, which has led to the abortion of female fetuses, state media said Monday.Sex-specific abortions have led to a large male population born since the 1980s, the China Daily newspaper said, citing a study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The gender imbalance means that the next decade will see many intergenerational marriages: young men married to women much older than them, the study said.

China's Communist Party implemented the one-child rule three decades ago, amid fears that the country would not be able to feed a skyrocketing population. The policy has prevented about 400 million births, China Daily said.

Couples living in cities are barred from having more than one child, unless neither parent has siblings. In rural areas, the law allows for a second child under certain circumstances. And the guidelines are looser for ethnic minorities with small populations.

Enforcement varies, but usually takes the form of fines to discourage extra births.

The policy has curbed population growth, and has led to forced sterilization in some parts of the country, the U.S. State Department said. Because of a traditional preference for male heirs, many Chinese also have aborted female fetuses, according to human rights groups.

Even within the country, calls to overhaul the law have increased in recent years, China Daily said.

But China has said it will maintain its one-child policy for at least another decade.

Nearly 200 million Chinese will enter child-bearing age in the next 10 years, Minister Zhang Weiqing told China Daily two years ago. He said abandoning the policy during this period would cause "serious problems and add extra pressure on social and economic development."

"After the new birth peak ends, we may adjust the policy if there is a need," he said.

China's population, which stands at about 1.3 billion, is growing at the rate of 0.6 percent. It is expected to peak around 1.6 billion by 2050, the U.S. State Department said.

Amby - I think will be yet another breakdown there, sometime in next 2 years, and homosexual couples will be given legal status in China.

Also - lots of Russian and Indian women getting married to Chinese men (if their families have money :D ) so - is nice balance for them.

Of course, USC males are helping to drain the female populations there, too , but is really less than 1 percent of all marriage-able females ;)

In the past when such an inbalance occured it was solved by going to war.

There is also evidence that, when single young men congregate, the potential for more organized aggression is likely to increase substantially (45, 53). Hudson and Den Boer, in their provocative writings on this subject (45, 46), go further, predicting that these men are likely to be attracted to military or military-type organizations, with the potential to be a trigger for large-scale domestic and international violence. With 40% of the world's population living in China and India, the authors argue that the sex imbalance could impact regional and global security, especially because the surrounding countries of Pakistan, Taiwan, Nepal, and Bangladesh also have high sex ratios.

India is already going through its own male-female population ratio imbalance 1000:880 or something like that; wonder what will happen to Indian men

There doesn't seem to be the same sort of sex-selection in cities. Ostensibly, sonograms are not allowed because of this trend, but anyone can get around that. Still, urban couples seem to be more accepting of female babies.

There is already a high imbalance in rural areas, and there are thousands of stories of fathers selling their daughters into marriage or women being kidnapped.

Sounds like the exact stories coming out of Indian rural areas. Also heard of stories of polyandry because of bride shortage, 3-4 brothers married to the same woman. More power to the woman I guess.

Would be funny to see the dowry system scenario in India, groom paying to get married.

The smart Chinese families would have kept their girl babies and then demanded insanely expensive dowries for them when they reached marrying age.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

dowry tradition in china is an exact reverse of western standard. men are expected to pay cash to the bride's mother in order to negotiate her agreement to the union. typical price varies by area and economic standing, but is usually something on the order of 2X annual salary - 5X annual salary. this money becomes property of the bride's mother, but is often used to furnish the newleywed apartment, which in china is often bare concrete walls and floors with no fixtures if purchased new. everythign from the doorknob to the water closet needs to be added, including the carpeting and kitchen cabinets/appliances.

Duh. The Chinese abort female babies because males are more valuable. Boys rule and girls drool...... er.... get flushed.

Chinese men may be more valuable but they are dumber than a box of rocks.
