the formula for disaster is when you cant put together 16,000 a year and need mommy and daddy to co-sponser.....and then live with the in-laws. Almost guaranteed to fail.

I know that having money does not bring you happiness....but having a lack of it will definitely make you unhappy. It is only a satisfyer, as you will some minimum in order to survive. Excess is not happiness, but security.

I would never bring anyone over here and try to live on 16,000. Thats a full time $8 an hour job. Your relationship will not survive this. It wont even get you to poor white trash level of quality of life. You recent graduates....get a good job....build up some savings, and dont live with your parents. Get established...stand on your own two feet. Dont use a co-sponser. It really takes balls to ask someone to provide a guarantee...a real imposition. And seeing how the 50% divorce rule applies...I sure wouldnt want to be holding the bag.

$16k is good in some countries, great in others... in america, its pretty bad. i don't think anyone has a problem with people that are volunteers or work for non-profits. at least i don't... but when you are dancing along the poverty line, all it takes is to be laid off for a few months, or an unexpected event like a hurricane or a medical emergency to sap your funds and leave you on the streets.
