I wouldn't equate an offended poster with HUAC. They don't have that kin of power. Keep it in perspective.

I understand your belief in free speech but you weren't too happy with a poster who had an signature image with a Nazi symbol for a short while.

I urge you to re-read my opening post there. My whole point was exactly what I'm arguing here! I used Danno's signature image as an example of something that offended me, but which I completely supported his right to use. Here were my words at the time:

censorship of outrageous and hideous things, like the image at the top of this post, are not the way we do things in America.

In my view, VJ members should be permitted to display such images, and post messages that are like in kind.

I trust in frank discourse and the commons of ideas to sort out the ensuing fracas better than I do jackboots and the censor's pen (or VJ moderation tools) to keep me "safe". In essence, I would rather see Danno's signature than another of Katherine's "this thread is locked for TOS violations" messages. The latter offends me more than the former.

Sure enough, she went ahead and locked the thread.

I'm much more peeved at her than I am at Danno, I can assure you.

Rest assured, that being charged with moderation of this website is not taken lightly. All threads and posts are balanced against the TOS and are acted on accordingly. This is fully supported and expected by the site owner. You know this, but I respect your opposition! Free speech is welcome here, to a reasonable point of course.

Visa Journey is what it is, an immigration help website. The side chatter needs some control or it would diminish the value of the actual immigration advice value.

It is an immigration website. Immigration to America. Not just any old country, but the country which first established formally the concepts of Liberty and inalienable rights. I wrote this, too, in my OP:

In America we cherish our First Amendment rights to speech.

We exercise these rights and are justly proud of them.

VisaJourney is a site devoted to people from all the countries of the world who are making their way to a new life in America.

Many of those countries do not have the same respect for rights that America does.

To my mind, VJ would provide a much better introduction to the nature of true American liberty by erring on the side of more speech, rather than less.

More agora of ideas, rather than less. More posts that strike some as offensive, rather than less. Above all, less censorship. Less stifling.

I still stand by that 100%.

Look, it's not my site. Ewok and Katherine and the rest of the mod squad can and will do whatever the hell you like.

But that's my view and I'm sticking to it.
