20 North American Imams issue fatwa against any terrorist attack on US or Canada

It's fine as far as it goes. Which is a modest step by a few clerics to issue a LIMITED condemnation of extremist violence. Only terrorism on US or Canadian soil is condemned here. Where is the condemnation of ALL such terrorism - worldwide, with no equivocation?

I suppose that bombing trains in London or Madrid is perfectly acceptable to these imams. Or blowing up night clubs in Berlin or Bali. Or buses and cafes in Israel. Or targets in Iraq, Jordan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, ...... .

When there is a true outrage welling up against ALL such violence throughout the Muslim world - from the streets and the madrassas and the mosques, of Cairo, Baghdad, Tehran, Jakarta, Rawalpindi - then I'll believe we've really turned a corner. Until then, it's an ongoing struggle to win the hearts and minds.

Yes, this is a positive small step. That's about all that can be said about it.

ISCC affiliated Imams Issue Important Fatwa

Attack on Canada and the United States is Attack on Muslims

Over 10 million Muslims Live in North America

Calgary) Twenty Imams affiliated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada have issued a Fatwa today declaring the attacks on Canada and the United States by any extremist will be the attack on 10 million Muslims living in North America. This is the first Fatwa by the Muslim clergy declaring attacks on Canada and the United States as attack on Muslims. Following is the text of the Fatwa.

FATWA (religious edict)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

We, the undersigned Imams, are issuing the following Fatwa in order to guide the Muslims of North America regarding the attacks on Canada and the United States by the terrorists and the extremists. In our view, these attacks are evil and Islam requires from Muslims to stand up against this evil. In the holy Qur’an Almighty Allah orders Muslims,

"Let there among you be a group that summon to all that is beneficial commands what is proper and forbids what is improper; they are the ones who will prosper." (3:104)

"Believing men and believing women are protecting friends of one another; they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong; they perform salat and give zakat..." (9:71)

"Those who, if We establish them in the land (with authority), establish regular prayers and practice regular charity and enjoin the right and forbid the wrong..." (22:41)

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in a Hadith;

"When people see a wrong-doer and do nothing to stop him, they may well be visited by God with a punishment."

Therefore, it is an obligation upon us (Imams) to inform all Muslims around the world that Muslims in Canada and the United States have complete freedom to practice Islam. There is no single city in Canada and the United States where MASAJIDS (Mosques) are not built. In all major cities Islamic schools provide education to Muslim children about Qur’an and the Islamic traditions. Thousands of Muslims perform Hajj every year and travel to Saudi Arabia with complete freedom and respect. In the month of Ramadan, both Canadian and the United States governments recognize the occasion and greet all Muslim citizens. Muslims pray five daily prayers in mosques without any fear or restrictions. Muslims have complete freedom to pay Zakat (poor due) to the charity or a person of their choice. Muslims have complete freedom to celebrate their festivals openly, publicly and Islamically. Muslims enjoy freedom of religion just like Christians, Jews and others. No one stops us from obeying Allah and His Messenger (Peace be upon him). No one stops us from preaching Islam and practicing Islam. In many cases, Muslims have more freedom to practice Islam here in Canada and the United States than many Muslim countries.

In fact, the constitutions of the United States and Canada are very close to the Islamic guiding principles of human rights and freedom. There is no conflict between the Islamic values of freedom and justice and the Canadian /US values of freedom and justice.

Therefore, any attack on Canada and the United States is an attack on the freedom of Canadian and American Muslims. Any attack on Canada and the United States is an attack on thousands of mosques across North America. It is a duty of every Canadian and American Muslim to safeguard Canada and the USA. They must expose any person, Muslim OR non-Muslim, who would cause harm to fellow Canadians OR Americans. We, Canadian and American Muslims, must condemn and stand up against these attacks on Canada and the United States.

May Allah save Canada, the United States and the entire world from the evil of wrong doers. Ameen.

It would appear, despite the personal attacks on my opinion that silence from the Muslim community and failure to condemn terrorist acts reflect negatively on Islam, that indeed there are leaders and followers of Islam who agree with my opinion.

Not surprising to me at all really.

Allama Imam Syed Mukhtar Naeemi – Houston, USA excellent !

IIRC,

Usually an Imam in the head of a mosque, ya? So that's 20 mosque leaders that have agreed to honor the fatwa.

It's a start. I hope all of the mosques (IN THE USA ) will adopt and honor that fatwa by the end of this month.

Personally, I think it mondo cool that a Houston Mosque Leader stepped up.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Yes, this is a positive small step. That's about all that can be said about it.

this is utterly ridiculous. numerous edicts have been issued addressing worldwide issues. this particular time, these men who live in NORTH AMERICA chose to specifically address NORTH AMERICA, their current home. syed soharwardy is a pretty prolific guy. he founded the muslims against terrorism organization back in the 90s, and has addressed worldwide issues a lot. in this interview with a canadian journalist he says Attacks on civilians (Muslims or non Muslims) at any time, peace time or war time, is forbidden in Islam. Any Muslim who attacks the children, women, sick and ordinary civilians of a community, regardless of their religious orientation, commits a serious sin and crime. Killing or hurting civilians because the American army kills indiscriminately at times cannot be justified. Muslims never react to an evil act by committing evil themselves.

bombing trains in london or madrid etc. is perfectly acceptable to them? critical reading/thinking is clearly not yr forte. omg, you only mention violence in the muslim world in yr post! that must mean you implicitly condone violence that occurs in other parts of the world, or at least find it perfectly acceptable because you don't condemn it here! you must then think that it's perfectly acceptable when narco terrorists in central and south america kidnap and murder people! or that it's perfectly fine that hundreds of thousands of congolese women have been raped during their civil war!

Still waiting for a Gandhi-like figure to arise that has the morally persuasive power to bring peace to the Middle East. But since I also been told there no need for such a person who cares? He'd be eliminated before he could get much done.

keep waiting on that one, buddy.

muslims do not admire men of peace. they admire men of violent action, preferebly thru trickery. this is what is taught in islam.

if that's the conclusion you come to after reading that thread, you should see a dr. it appears you are suffering from delusions.

like i said before, it's a matter of course that muslims find such acts abhorrent. re-read post #40. it sums up the whole damn thing pretty nicely. sofiyya handed you yr ####### in that post.

I disagree, but did misread a part of one of her posts. Go back to your drawing board, telling me I need to see a doctor is getting a bit old.

I was told Muslims are under no obligation to condemn such acts, that is the focus of the assault on my opinion. And of course that one must possess a doctorate in Islamic studies to voice an opinion.

This OP, the fatwa on terrorism is a positive thing, too bad the VJ Islamic Defense Society is determined to leave a bad taste in all unbelievers mouths.

the issue isn't really one of "obligation to condemn such acts or not" though. it never has been. what you fail to understand is that condemnation, disdain and abhorrence for such acts is an implicit part of being muslim in the first place. you refuse to believe this. people who commit terrorism refuse to believe that too. that's something the both of you have in common.

I personally know this imam, he gave lectures in our mosque in NC before. His teacher got martyred in Lahore in his mosque his name was Sarfraz Ahmed Naeemi. I'm not imam but regulary attend mosque but the problem is no one has communicated such fatwa to other mosques. I believe if the fatwa document goes to each and every mosque in usa then you will see thousands imams signature on it. I guess only few imams attended the meeting to declare the fatwa. Last year the imams in NY protested against the talibans and terrorist who killed Sarfraz Ahmed Naeemi, but I can't find the article online.
