Funny how people always seem to mention south dakota when talking about places they imagine it might be easy to find a job.

My wife's a teacher in her third year of teaching; she and all her peers are trying to find a job in a public school (they teach private right now) but have not been successful thus far. Every time they get together to wallow in self pity over this, south dakota always comes up. Every time.

All the good jobs are just over the state line in North Dakota. All the unemployed people in South Dakota keeps talking about this.

I've lived in ND long enough to know better. ;)

Two years seems pretty much what everyone wants, even on med-surg units. The emphasis in my program is networking with the people you're doing clinicals with and/or your CNA job. Some swear that if you do a good job with your proctorship, you might get hired onto the unit. (And my school is now dishing them out based on GPA.)

Personally, I'd be okay with working rural or in a nursing home. The problem is that my husband probably couldn't get a job in those environments...so yeah..

that's great that yr program emphasizes that. mine was not so great in that area. and admittedly i didn't do a whole lot of footwork on my end to really build up those connections. i was pregnant my entire final year of school, and graduated two weeks after my daughter was born. by the time i got to my last semester of school, i was just too tired to do much of anything besides just get through school. from talking to my past instructors, and other people i went to school with though, most of us were in the same boat- it took awhile to find a job. there were several people in the program who had worked as cnas for years in various hospitals, and had jobs guaranteed for them when they got their rn license. but just about everyone else had to fill out a lot of applications, and get called for an interview on a very, very tiny percentage of the applications they filled out. you'll be just fine though.
