What is it with the Americans and Geography

It is a cliché the world over that Americans don't know where ANYTHING is in the world.

I was at York Minster once when an American girl got talking to me - she said she was going to Norway tomorrow and is that in the North of England too ?

I just watched CNN and they had a 'report' that France was the best place to live - they had a picture of the Brandenburg gate it the background during the report

Why is it like this ??? I know they sell globes here....

Now I understand - thank you for your insight..

It should have been apparent before, so I do beg your pardon for asking

I always get a good laugh at the Brits when I'm over 'ome. They think they can fly to Toronto and see the Rockies from there. LOL

My Indian FIL asked me on a drive to Rochester (NY) from NJ whether or not we'll be passing through Denver.

Why are you always bashing America or Americans?

I mean I could barely read your post because of my poor American school education. I suppose everyone in the UK is a brilliant scholar.....

It is a cliche that Brits are asexual stuffy sticks in the mud? Does this hold true for the whole population?

Common guy, what kinda question is that? And do you really expect a serious answer?

My British BIL wanted to fly into Toronto and then drive down to Boston for the day.

ive noticed a lot of people from europe have trouble with the geographic scale of north america ...

kinda how people like me (from the northeastern us) have trouble with the geographic scale of a place like texas

Common guy, what kinda question is that?

He is British, there is nothing common about him!

Doesn't she know that Norway is in Maine?

So is Poland, and Mexico for that matter.

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

I hear ya. People are just ignorant. It's another reason I like to travel globally.

People (including the media) have no idea what the outside of a nuclear power plant looks like (never mind the inside).

This is a cooling tower... not a nuclear reactor. Any type of power plant can use a cooling tower.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I work for the fed. government and have always been great at geography, a skill I must have taken for granted.

We often do certified mailings in the department I work in. I actually had one of my co-workers (who is about 45 years old) tell me that Canada is part of the US so we can send a certified letter there.

It took me 20 minutes and a wikipedia search for me to convince her that Canada was, in fact, another country.

She had no doubt about Mexico though  go figure.

Another time, someone asked me what nationality my husband was (I have pictures of us on my desk). I told them "Peruvian" they were like  "oh, but what country is he from?" so I say "Peru." And I get an awkward pause & another one of these looks:  So I know she has no idea what I'm talking about, so I say "Peru is in South America" and she says "Oh I thought he looked Spanish!"

Riiiight....
