Hey everyone ... I need some input if you all don't mind! A while ago I posted about a potential promotion I was up for ... well, I was successful and the position has been offered to me! I would be starting at the new job January 25 (three days before our interview ... lol). Do you think it's incredibly jerkish to accept the position and then leave a few months later?

I'm really not sure what to do =\ I feel bad accepting it when I know that I'll leave just a month or two after taking it.

Your thoughts?

I would pass on it. Let them train someone who is going in for the long term (wow, that sounds really b1tchy, but I really don't mean it like that!).

Montreal: BEAT!!! Approved!!!!!

I know a lot of people will differ with me on this, and have their own justifications for doing so.

Personally, like Mal, I would be passing on it. I think it's disingenuous to accept a promotion when you KNOW you are going to be leaving the company (and country!) quite soon. It's the same fundamental reason why, when I was laid off recently, I didn't go out and get another job: I couldn't handle the idea of joining a company under false pretenses, and essentially living a lie while working there. What would I tell them when they ask the ubiquitous "where do you see yourself in five years" question? And I'm NOT a liar, whether it's about little things or bigger things like that. Unfortunately, honesty sometimes costs a person. Some think it's not worth the cost, others (like me) do.

But as for your situation, if you think you can live with it, making more money, doing a more interesting / challenging job while maintaining that facade, go for it. Some folks would point out that a company never has YOUR best interests at heart anyhow, so why should you have theirs? I don't share that point of view, but there is admittedly some validity to it.

Hope this little disjointed rambling helps. :)

I really appreciate your honesty guys. I am leaning towards saying no, but I'm shaking my fist at my employer, haha. I literally applied for this position MONTHS ago ... I mean, we're talking more than half a year ago and they offer it to me NOW!? Grr ... but anyway, that's a whole other rant.

The one thing that I feel terrified about is if I say no and then we are denied at the interview ... that would be so terrible

I wouldn't take the position either Ali. I think that you should let them offer it to someone who will commit long term.

Just be honest with them and tell them that you're moving, otherwise you would've accepted.

do they know you will be leaving soon?

Yes, they do know, but I haven't given them an exact date as I am honestly not sure when we'll leave.

Also -- I wanted to add that there would be very minimal training for the new position, as it is only a bit more responsibility (we're short staffed so I have been doing this job for the most part anyway).

Ali, to me it sounds like you want to take it but aren't sure it is the right thing to do. I don't really know much about your job and your history with the company, but if you aren't concerned with burning your bridges so to speak, I think you should take the promotion. If you believe that you may need them as a job reference in the future, or as a good fall back in the rare case life in the US doesn't work out, then you probably shouldn't. Maybe sit down and tell them you plan to leave sometime in the next year but would love to fill the position in the meantime and see what they say?

Yeah, I was just about to post something to that effect too.

If they KNOW that you'll be leaving at some point, and gave you the promotion anyhow, then there's some grounds for discussion there.

However, this is the same company that wouldn't let you take a couple of days off for your interview... Worth bearing in mind, no?

Very true -- and the most hilarious thing about that is that they just approved that time off for me on Monday, then today they offer me this position. I seriously have no idea what they're on sometimes.

I do want to take it, and though I don't want to burn bridges with them I DO want to be compensated for the extra work I put in. I've had like 5 managers since I've been there anyway, so I am not sure that a reference is even viable from them, anyway, lol.
