tire quality is more of a concern than the rear weight..

Depends upon what "nasty" weather is. We live in Buffalo and have 2-4wd pickups, 1 half ton and 1-3/4 ton for work. The half ton I just drive on the plowed roads and rarely on the unplowed stuff. The 3/4 ton, well, let's just say it is a different story. It has a plow on it and to counter the plow and add weight (even when the plow is off) I put 3 bags of tube sand over the rear axle, I go where I want, when I want. At the end of the season I just cut the bags and dump the sand in a rut that needs filling. This is for the real nasty weather here.....

No longer in the hands of the USCIS, for my wife at least, next up MIL.

Four wheel drive doesn't care, if the front axle is engaged. Chances are, you don't want to drive on pavement like that, unless the road is already slippery.

The newer trucks all have ABS, which may actually increase stopping distance if one of the wheels starts sliding. Throw your tire chains and some bags of sand in the back. That might give you some more traction, even if you don't use them for anything more than ballast.

I never put weight in the back of my 4wd. The only time I put weight in the back of a pick up was when I had a 2wd.

just to all those other hero's I've seen in ditches, against guard rails, wrapped around trees, etc with their 4wd vehicles over the years.

I think it depends on where you live. Back where I used to live anyone and everyone who owned a truck had wsome sort of weight in the back. The problem with thrucks back home is that on snow packed/icy roads the trucks slides alot more easier. Not just sloding foward but the back end will go sideways end up spinning you around. There's nothing for the back tires to grab onto 4wd or not. Its like the back end is foating.

This is a pretty common thing that is done here (as in with people I know in Calgary). What we did, for our car, is put paving stones (the big ones) in the trunk in the winter. Why paving stones you ask? Because they are actually very inexpensive, weigh a lot, don't take up much room and you can add them to your yard in the spring! (we also carry a couple of bags of sand)

We don't use the paving stones now because we have an SUV, so no trunk and although the pavers are heavy, I would be concerned about them shifting if you had to slam on the brakes or went in to a ditch.
