The embasy asked me to send the original birth certifiacte. I dont have one so they called me and asked about it. I said that I never got one. All I can give you is the national ID card (it has more value in our country) and school records shwoing the date of births, father name etc. Do you think it is a problem and they can deny our case if we dont give them the birth certificate?

Hi, I had to show the original birth certificate at my interview here in Germany. They kept a notarized copy. You better get one otherwise you might have a problem.

Hi I do not know if this will help or not.

My fiancee is from I raq and does not have a birth certificate just like you she never had one.

She does however have an ID Card just like yours.

I contacted the American consulate where my fiancee will attend her interview (Amman, Jordan)about this

matter and was informed that it was ok for her to just bring her ID Card instead.

You can email your consulate and ask if it is ok for you to use your ID Card instead of a birth certificate.

It says in package 3, a list of countries where you should not try and apply for a birth certificate.

I think Irag was one of them, infact im almost sure.

My fiance is going through the same thing right now. In Argentina, they keep your official birth certificate at the national record center (or something like that, I don't remember the specific name) and give you a national ID card. You can request for a copy of your birth certificate, but not the actual, original certificate.

He is still waiting for an answer from the embassy.

If a birth certificate is available in your country, the consulate will require it. You must get a copy of your BC...

Go to this link, it talks about how to get required documents from most countries and if it doesnt specifically talk about birth certificate it usually gives you a good point of contact to try and figure it out

If your country is not on the list of exempt countries, you will need a certified copy of your birth certificate.

The document checklist for K and immigrant visa applicants (often called OF-169 or DS-2001) should contain a paragraph about alternatives when a birth certificate is unobtainable. The alternatives may be country specific.

Just heard back from the embassy. Yep, a certified copy is what most embassies require.

I got this from the instruction sheet for the K1 Visa on the US Consulate Webpage for Japan.

UNOBTAINABLE BIRTH CERTIFICATES: If an official birth certificate is not obtainable, present the best possible secondary evidence, such as a timely registered baptismal certificate, hospital certificate, school records and/or a notarized affidavit from your parents. In general, we will not accept secondary evidence unless there is proof that an official birth record is unavailable from the issuing office.
